The Story

Well this is absolute bullsh*t and the beginning to a very slippery slope. I can't stand the music/film industry at them moment, with latter being something I want to be a part of. They just don't seem to get piracy at all. They think by blocking the sites people are just going to start paying for things ? Battling piracy is not going to work, they are going to have to come up with something better. Its called adapt to survive. iTunes has loads of business because it caters to the new on demand tastes we have taken a liking to. If a film isn't on demand for me, I usually pirate it because I can't be f*cked to walk to my store to pay £10 for something ill watch once but publishers either don't get this or are trying there best to stick with the old ways which are dying fast. Why not put your films up for online rental with streaming for say £2 for 24hours (with apps on 360's,ps3's, ipads etc lots of people have something with an Internet connection running into there tv's)? Most people I know would take that over pirating option because its fast and inexpensive.

Whats everyone elses view

As its only a small torrent file that needs to be downloaded, I don't think it'll stop many using a proxy. It's just a ruling, it probably won't affect many people. Not that I condone piracy of course.

True. I am not too bothered by this ruling as I don't use torrents but I am just worried at the trend its about to set off. Where does it stop after one website is blocked ?

Nowhere, really. The legislation that is being used to block this is the same as has been used to block all manner of unsightly and dangerous things in the past. It's just being applied to a different kind of illegal activity this time.

Though it will change absolutely nothing. It's only really noteworthy because of the size of ThePirateBay.

Read this on the Guardian App earlier, and whilst it annoyed me in one sense, due to how many sites seem to be getting shut down as of lately, it's only one of the many torrent sites that are out there and available to everyone.

Very true. I used to use it until it switched to using Magnet links and, seeing as they're awful , I just went ahead and started using a different site. The solution to this "problem" really is solved that easily. But, as Mark said, where does it stop? How long will it be before all torrent sites are shut down?

From my perspective, the biggest risk is that more and more common or garden users begin to frequent the so-called "dark internet" for their free downloads. That's extremely dangerous for all as it moves the piracy issue away from the public perception and hands the momentum to organised criminals.

Does this have anything to do with the new government that wanted to ban coffeeshops as well?

Seems like this new government is sh*tting all over the liberal image of The Netherlands I had.

I definitely agree that it has become more open and accessible to the common user. I know a guy who's not exactly intellectually gifted yet he hasn't bought an album or a film in a very long time due to how easy it is to download everything for free. Another thing is that it doesn't even stop at music or films. PC software, Android and iPhone apps, PC and console games, nearly any sort of media that's available to the "pirates" will be distributed in an illegal manner. On one hand, I think it's absolutely amazing that one can simply search for few minutes and have the entire discography of your favourite band ready to go and be listened to within minutes. On the other hand, it's a shame that these artists are technically having their music stolen. Then again, if it really was such a massive problem, those same artists wouldn't be riding around in their Bentleys and whatnot.

The problem is I find is the websites doing nothing illegal, its the people that use it that are.

Its the with the same mentality that we should close down Bong shops, because there tools that help get you high.

So by your logic, we should all wear non stringed shoes because people can hang themselves with the laces? lol...

Head Shops aren't bad. They sell "tobacco" pipes. wink.gif

It just so happens my tobacco is green and makes me feel all happy and fuzzy. icon14.gif

I smoke weed nearly everyday, so I am not against in the slightest and even if I didn't smoke it I don't have the right to complain about people who do. I was just using an example that if took place people would be up in arms.

And the shoe laces example was terrible as well. The main purpose of a shoe lace is to tie shoes together- not illegal however a bongs main purpose is to help one get high -illegal.

I think the argument is that, because ThePirateBay is almost solely used for illegal purposes, it's justified. There are plenty of BT sites designed for purposes that are not illegal. As such, a better analogy would be to close down a bong shop which is letting customers sell weed out of the back door. Which would be perfectly legitimate.

Well, Ziggo and XS4ALL have blocked some torrentsites if I'm not mistaken.
But it's true some ISP have blocked Thepiratebay.
Our ISP is Telfort and I can get on Thepiratebay
