I personally find that statement a bit silly, especially since we know GTAV will revisit an already done city (maybe even map?). It's like if Columbus went to rediscover Americas, but the second time around taking an assortment of silly hats.

No offence but your comment is a little silly. It's like saying the film Falling Down and Pretty Woman are the same because they're both set in L.A.

I'd guess that they've done a major overhall of an aspect of the game that has always existed in the series. No idea what though!

I think there could be a wide variety of organized criminal activity. A little bit of everything from street gangs, to european mafia types. Perhaps a bold new direction will include being part of "white collar" corporate crime. Showing how criminals from different backgrounds and levels of society are connected, would add a unique twist to the usual thug rising to power tale. I could imagine the protagonist being an older head of a large financial firm, who funnels money using corporate accounts, and finding ways to work with street gangs in order to hide money.
This could be one of the biggest, and most intricate stories ever. Criminals from completely different philosophies working together for the common greed would certainly elevate this game from the predictable rags to riches story. Having missions where you commit crimes that involve espionage in order to steal personal information and running credit card scams could be a great way to break up the monotony of simply using force to steal money. There are countless ways to show the hidden criminal world that we don't get to see in most movies and games.

Maybe for a different game but I wouldn't like this for GTA, I'd never connect with the character if he was a phony elite corporate douchebag

As countless others have said, I don't think it means a whole lot. Devs always throw this type of statement out, and it never has much weight. "Biggest game yet" "A bold new direction" "pushing the boundaries/limits" "revolutionary ideas" : It's all just jargon they use to make it sound good.

No offence but your comment is a little silly. It's like saying the film Falling Down and Pretty Woman are the same because they're both set in L.A.

Falling down is a movie about a guy who, after breaking down on the streets of LA, decides to go back home which is not home anymore. On the road he passes gang lands, faces crazed militants and begins acting as a hard core criminal, forgetting about his everyday commuting life in a matter of one afternoon. This movie is on the borderline of a thriller and a drama.

Pretty woman is a romantic comedy on a borderline of a fairytale about a rich guy falling for a prostitute, making her hopes and dreams come true.

------------

GTA San Andreas is a mixed action game set in virtual LA (and "surrounding" areas). It involves killing, driving, performing various stunts; has some adventuring and RPG elements and follows a mission driven plot in a "gangsta"/criminal setting.

GTAV will be a mixed action game set in virtual LA (and probably surrounding areas). It will involve killing, driving (and most probably stunts); it should have a fair amount of adventuring and it most definitively will have a mission driver plot in a (extremely probable) criminal setting.

-----------

You fail at comparison skills, sir.

We don't know. it could be anything from adding new mechanics to the RAGE engine (improved vehicle damage, max payne shooting mechanics, better driving physics and weapons, etc) to referencing the new take on the Los Santos area.

We really don't know what it means until Rockstar comes out and tells us, or we get the game in our hands.

It just stands out for me more than all the other's you listed. "Bold new direction" really is quite a statement. "New direction" isn't a phrase that's banded about for every new game, because most sequels aim to be more of the same but better. They always use "bigger" "better" "revolutionary" but "bold new direction" honestly sounds like it has some weight behind it. It's not just saying "new" it's saying "different".

But it could refer to almost anything. It could be in the storytelling, the gameplay or just some re-imagining of the basics. I don't believe Rockstar will be doing anything that feels like GTA 4.5 or simply just re-introducing old stuff from San Andreas. Something about this game is going to explain why it's GTA V and not GTA: Los Santos or similar. I'm sure that in many ways this game will play quite differently than GTA IV.

I read that in the computer voice of the GTA 5 section parody video lol.gif

and MiamiViceCity, GTA4 totally experimented with that concept of control, giving you a sense of false control, like when Francis ordered you to kill Derrick, could you imagine in GTAV, a boss gave you an order to take back his kidnapped daughter from a gang, you could instead team up with the gang, but give the boss the impression your still owrking for him and stuff. It's a logical progression, I'm not sure exactly how it could work though...

Some site (or R* themselves) called MP3's multiplayer "perhaps the boldest move in MP in recent years".

Google for more info.

IMO it won't be changed so significantly as some may think..

This.

The word 'bold' suggests 'ballsy', to me. They're going to do something new they have never, ever done before, most likely. Knowing Rockstar, they won't fail to deliver.

I kind of always expect each new GTA game to go in a new direction anyways. GTA has always done this, although to varying degrees. You could argue that each new game has gone "in a bold new direction". I just think it's too vague to really pinpoint it to anything, and probably will stay that way even when things become clearer. It just seems like a generic statement, even if it's not necessarily a proper overused cliché. It still feels kinda meaningless. I guess different people with interpret it differently.
