I think it just means the way you trigger missions and how the story progresses.

For example, instead of having missions triggered by going to a specific place and walking into the yellow marker to trigger the mission, it could be implemented randomly.

Like, you could just be walking down the street and somebody could run up to you and that will trigger the mission.

Just my take on it.

I think we may be either a member or even leader of a crew, (maybe we have to work our way up) and we can interact with crew members in and out of missions.
This could provide the option of drop inb drop out co-op in single player (should you choose you want to).

I don't want multiple protags or the option of playing different intertwining stories with different protags (this will cause each story to be short).

I don't think they'd come out with such a BOLD statement if it was just a lie.
They'd just say "This game is going to be the most amazing GTA game ever" if it was a marketing ploy but the actual statement is too specific and brash.

No, to get those faces to work they had to leave out a lot of other graphic effects. That's why it looks nice but rather static and why you have complex facial animation and not so complex body animation, no day/night cycle, dimwitted AI, etc... it wouldn't work for GTA, yet.. but come next gen you're gonna see everybody come out with these kinds of motion scan/ full performance capture technologies that'll make LA Noire look like a clumsy first step.

What it means is, whatever happened before, the way things were done before - it's in the past.

People can go back and forth over why it's named GTA V and not something else. It's a new page being turned. Other than an Easter Egg or two, the series' history is nothing but history. IV brought the series in look and feel to this generation, and V will do it with the gameplay in a way Rockstar couldn't do until they had enough time and something to build upon with the current hardware.

When it comes out, we'll be wondering what we were arguing about on here and we'll really have something to talk about.

I agree with the OP, I think a main factor of the 'bold new direction' will be to do with money management. As the OP said their is a strong difference between the rich and the poor within the trailer and I think R* are really going to build on this and make us feel the social divide as a player.

I believe there will be more to this also, but i'm not sure what else, maybe better mechanics and a lot of detail on character building, can't wait to play the game and find out for sure.
