| QUOTE (sivispacem @ Monday, May 7 2012, 09:21) | | QUOTE (Der_Don @ Monday, May 7 2012, 08:32) | | Everybody expected this, now it's official. Francois Hollande is going to be the next President. Will be interesting to see what this means for the relationship between Germany and France. |
It's a disaster, in my view. Sarkozy was hated principally on how he presented himself-as a vestige of the old guard- rather than for his political policies. In voting for Hollande, what France have essentially done is replace strong political leadership with an unpleasant face, with weak leadership and policies presented more favourably. It's a catastrophe for France; not just because of his lack of political leadership, but also because of his staunch anti-military views which is inevitably going to lead to changes in France's strategic value and knock-on negative effects for her European defence partners. | You're right, Hollande is already at odds with Germany. Therefore his election does not bode well for France's future in the Eurozone, it probably won't cause any dramatic changes but I maintain that this could allow England to move closer to Germany and gain a stronger footing in the EU. So it could be bad for France but good for us.

There has been mention of members of his party pushing for unilateral nuclear disarmament. 'Nuff said, really. | But as I'm sure you know once leaders who espouse such reckless ideas get into government, they tend to realize that, well, that's stupid for lack of a better term. Examples are Tea Party congressmen.

I have a feeling that once M. Hollande steps into the Elysée Palace and sees the numbers he's having to work with, he won't be able to deliver on everything he says; much like any nation leader in this day and age, really. The curse of inheriting the crap left behind by the previous administration (and the one before that, and the one before that, etc. etc.) Also, in spite of his wishes to re-negotiate the Budget Discipline treaty, I doubt he'll go out of his way to utterly alienate Germany. Especially if he is, as some are saying "a bit of a weak leader".
In the words of the French, reste calme et poursuivre. Let's see how things go once the new administration gets in and starts putting forth new laws in the Assemblée Nationale.
