Le Pen got 1/5 of the first round vote? f*ck me. Either a lot of people cast a protest vote or the far-right in France garners much more support than I'd have thought.

No. It just seems that American's have a lot of Gaul.

Even with all this stupid hyperbole and ignorance, the entire thread was worth it for this.

By the looks of things Hollande will porb win the election & in 2014 with UKIP now being the 3rd biggest party in UK ahead of Liberal Democrats & if Nigel Farage wins the 2014 UK elections then its bye bye EU with UK & France leaving it their only superpower in it then would be Germany

UKIP, like most Eurosceptic parties, are not realists and are simply using the xenophobia and ignorance of the masses to garner support.
I maintain that they really are just the bastard child of the BNP. Nothing more.

Farage does really love to hate Herman Van Rompuy. There seems to be a new video every other month of him just tearing into him at the European Parliament. He basically just acts like the typical Englishman abroad by berating the bewildered foreign guy in his own country. But yh UKIP is basically BNP lite.

There used to be this guy who sat next to me in my geography class at college, and he was possibly the biggest UKIP fan I've ever met, although admittedly he is the only one I have met. He was racist, but in a hilarious way. He was like a cliché 50's working man: sexist and racist, and rather bizarrely sounded a little bit like Fred "I say I say" Elliott from Coronation street.

By what measure? In terms of seats, the Green Party are stronger than UKIP in parliamentary elections. It will honestly be a cold day in hell before that incompetent bigot leads anything more important than a marching band.

That's blatantly incorrect. They don't even have one seat in Parliament for christ's sake.

Everybody expected this, now it's official. Francois Hollande is going to be the next President. Will be interesting to see what this means for the relationship between Germany and France.

The really shocking thing is what happened in Greece last night. A political desaster. It'll be difficult to build a new government after about 60 % of the people voted for far left/ right wing-parties. I wonder when our politicians realise that we're better off without Greece. They should just leave the Euro-Zone. The Euro will survive this.

Same sanity at last! Yes, we have to kick them out. They seem set upon dragging everyone down with them and have shown zero gratitude towards the Germans.
Their current predicament is not the fault of anyone save for the Greeks, who for years pacified their people through failing economic policies which rewarded sloth and gave menial workers unrealistic wages that could not be sustained.

The European Union is bigger than any one nation and, frankly, we've done all we can to help these ingrates.

It's a disaster, in my view. Sarkozy was hated principally on how he presented himself-as a vestige of the old guard- rather than for his political policies. In voting for Hollande, what France have essentially done is replace strong political leadership with an unpleasant face, with weak leadership and policies presented more favourably. It's a catastrophe for France; not just because of his lack of political leadership, but also because of his staunch anti-military views which is inevitably going to lead to changes in France's strategic value and knock-on negative effects for her European defence partners.

How is he any more anti military than Cameron, who gutted what vestiges of the once powerful British military remained?

You're right, Hollande is already at odds with Germany. Therefore his election does not bode well for France's future in the Eurozone, it probably won't cause any dramatic changes but I maintain that this could allow England to move closer to Germany and gain a stronger footing in the EU.
So it could be bad for France but good for us.

There has been mention of members of his party pushing for unilateral nuclear disarmament. 'Nuff said, really.

But as I'm sure you know once leaders who espouse such reckless ideas get into government, they tend to realize that, well, that's stupid for lack of a better term. Examples are Tea Party congressmen.

I have a feeling that once M. Hollande steps into the Elysée Palace and sees the numbers he's having to work with, he won't be able to deliver on everything he says; much like any nation leader in this day and age, really. The curse of inheriting the crap left behind by the previous administration (and the one before that, and the one before that, etc. etc.) Also, in spite of his wishes to re-negotiate the Budget Discipline treaty, I doubt he'll go out of his way to utterly alienate Germany. Especially if he is, as some are saying "a bit of a weak leader".

In the words of the French, reste calme et poursuivre. Let's see how things go once the new administration gets in and starts putting forth new laws in the Assemblée Nationale.

Apparently this guy wants to significantly reduce France's nuclear power dependance and replace it with "green" energy.

Lmfao, good luck with that. sigh.gif

Thankfully it's a presidential system and he won't be able to create policy on the issue single-handedly. Still, it's a dark day when France elects a president so strictly opposed to their two primary exports- nuclear technologies and weapons. Next he'll be banning cheese, wine and Renaults.
