Since upgrading my broadband limit to 40GB a month I always seem to go over. Since the start of this month I have apparently used 27GB. I know for a fact I have downloaded 7GB. I don’t see where this 20GB usage has come from? Our BT Home hub 2.0 router is using WPA2 encryption and me and my dad are the only ones who use the internet. Pretty much every day I’ll browse a bit of YouTube and watch about ten videos at no more than 360p. Does gaming online (both Xbox and PC) use a lot of my limit? On the BT website my dad checked out usage last night which it was at 27GB and now today its 30GB. During that time everything connected to my router has been turned off and the router itself was off. P.S I don’t torrent.

If you use Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, play games over XBL and PC it adds to the Download limit. Pretty much everything you do on the internet adds to your limit.

Does BT provide a breakdown of usage in your account, I'm with plusnet and they provide this service and they are part of BT. If they do then check this to see where it's coming from.

If you don't narrow it down from there then you either have one of three things happening:

1) Your line is being jacked either wirelessly or physically, if you have wireless and don't use it, then turn it off (I still prefer cable anyway), if this doesn't stop it then it could be physically, which would be harder to track down.
2) Someone near you or on the same exchange could probably be on the same line/IP Address as you in the exchange, if this is the case then you would need to contact BT to see if this could be case, especially if you can prove your connection/router has/is turned off when these downloads are being shown on your usage.
3) And this isn't the best reason, but could be true... your dad is secret pr0n addict.

Maybe big, bad Google Wifi Sniffing?!?
It's true that an always on, accessible signal can be borrowed, but just so you know, it's not me, I have a legit connection!
Anyone can go to the library and use their filtered online or a Coffee house, so there are options other then your neighbor, but turning it off when not in use, just unplugging, etc, should help

Since you're protecting your Wireless, get a proper billing report, insist on where those charges originate, you pay, you deserve answers, so demand! haha

It doesn't have to be your computers, or consoles. Your smartphone can used up bandwidth that is if you connect it to your home wifi.

Make sure no one is piggybacking your connection (or although, since you say everything is turned off that shouldn't be a problem ).

I'm on 40gb download with BT and never get close to going over and me and my girlfriend are on PC's / Laptop's all the time
Granted, we don't download games or films but we use Youtube alot and do loads of online gaming and surfing in general

Something don't add up on your usage..speak to BT and get a breakdown etc
Could be someone has piggybacked onto you and has contributed to your usage

But remember...BT are a bunch of useless gits who will look at any excuse to not fix the issue..at least that is what I have found in the 14 years of paying their absurd bills

So you say 10YT videos a day at 360p? Well resolution isn't the only thing that dictates how much usage it uses, quality does too.
Well at a guess i think the YT would use about 500MB a day, that's 15GB in a month.

Your average FB and GTAF browsing you are likely to see a lot of photos, add another maybe 200MB so that's another 7GB a month, that's just you.
Your dad might do the exact same thing, that's more than 40GB right there.

Gaming doesn't really add too much to your data usage, it would be like 30MB an hour (Call Of Duty), depends on the game though, general net browsing, YouTube, and your dads porn addiction are going to be what chews up most of your internet usage.

Wait. The price difference between a 40GB cap and unlimited is £4?!? It makes you wonder how much of a limited budget someone has to be on that they can't afford the £4 extra?
I mean if you need that £4 extra pounds each month to buy food for your kids the last thing you need to spending money on is internet at all.

Well my dad is always a bit tight with money even though we are doing quite well. If I remember it was around an extra £10 to go from 10GB a month to 40GB.

Usage caps are only there to try and keep the anti-piracy lot happy, but really there is no real need for them to exist, except for the ISP's to earn a few extra quid.

For me to go "Unlimited*" it would cost me a load more, about £10-£15, due to my area and availability.

*Unlimited, there is a joke term if ever I heard it.
