I've read elsewhere that Johnny is the 'preferred' character and that a lot of people like him, albeit they don't think TLaD is the best GTA.

Anyway, I was wondering, what makes Johnny so special? What deviates him from the others? I ain't trying to say you're wrong, or that I disagree with you, I am just curious.

IMO it's a tie between Niko and Johnny.
Niko was a really deep character, something quite uncommon for a video game and was brand new to the GTA-series.
Niko's morale did, however, fit the game very well, and i think we'll be seeing someone just as deep, or deeper, as the protagonist GTA V.
Johnny was just badass. He was deep like Niko too, but not as much. He is quite the ideal protagonist for a GTA game.
He also seemed like a "bro" to me.
Luis was too generic IMO. His story was weak, and seemed like hired gun with no brains most of the time.

honestly.. i HATE him, he is way too arrogant to be a protag, niko is a way better character

Niko and Johnny have a certain vibe about them. They're ccol, badass and have a sense of wisdom. And as said before you can relate to their personality, they're "bros".

I like them alot. Not sure about Luis yet.

Actually people prefer Niko or Luis over Johnny
for me i liked him cuz he reminds me of me i can relate to him, and he was deep he actually cared about life ,he wasn't just an arrogant moron like Luis..
i think i can say that Niko was deep, tho he was kinda of an idiot working and gettin passed around by the mob, he was empty inside just a cold blood killer, Johnny had his principles and did whatever it took to help the Lost and his friends

I like Johnny, too bad in GTA series our protagonist always end up as a bitch to someone else who got a bigger power..
The main reason I like Johnny is because I like his badass biker image and way of life..
Sadly TLaD is just DLC so Johnny don't get a long and deep story like Niko in GTA Vanilla..
