Note: I know this doesn't really warrant it's own topic, but I'm really excited. And if I post this on my facebook/twitter I'm going to get alot of "You shouldn't be spending money on yourself, you should be... blah, blah, blah" from my relatives, so to avoid that, I'm posting where I won't be treated like a child, and where the only comments like that will be from trolls who don't really matter. Anyway. They'll be telling me that no matter where I post it, but it's fun to get tech toys, that's why I'm hopelessly taking in strays, it's fun to dive into such projects. Plan to unscrew everything and peek under the hood? The only regret I have doing so is related to the damn touchpad palmrest, TWICE it stopped working due to some unforeseen complication in the assembly - disassembly.
For me, both Sony and Acer touchpads stopped working, not sure why either, It's SAFE to remove some panels and see what you can upgrade, but if you're worried about warranty, just wait till it expires. Sony is not all that reliable, my K series Vaio overheated big time!

Seriously though sounds like a nice system. The white I'm not digging on but then you're not me. I do hope you don't have the same build in Wifi I have in my HP. Intel Wifi Link 1000. OMG (and I hardly ever type that) does it suck (sucks so bad nicest way I could say on the forums is OMG). The speeds are fine, that is if the <bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep>ing thing would stay connected. | Yeah, I remember a while ago, you were telling me about that card. There were no options to change it on the site, so I'm going to have to check it out when it comes in. | QUOTE (PrometheusX) | | Would you please give the Laptop's exact name (VPC-.........)? |
updated the OP with the model no.

I currently have a netbook, it's a HP mini, with Nvidia ION so it's one the more powerful ones compare to other netbooks that uses Intel IGP. When this netbook is pushing up daisies, I may consider on getting a Sony for myself. I really like their S series which has the 2nd smallest size screen of 13.3" as I want something light for traveling, yet powerful so I don't have to wait forever for a program to finish. Uses 2nd gen Intel CPUs (i3/5/7) It's even got a single USB 3.0 port, lots of hardware customizations, and best of all it has a optical drives as it's annoying to have a external lugging around, which defeats the purpose of portability. Well that's what I like currently... When my HP does go kaput, I'll have to see what is my next favorite as Sony always updates their notebook models. Congrats on getting a brand new notebook! Well, Sony ain't complete crap, but I've talked to more then one person who says their quality is real poor, they have been known to cut costs and skimp, the same can be said of Microsoft regarding their Xbox 360 construction, so, well, you make the call! hahaha
Built in Wifi is most often just a card, easily swapped out just like RAM modules!

My Acer Gemstone is better then my VAIO, though, clearly not the same vintage, you got Sony from spring 2004 for $1400 thereabouts, compared with Acer's bargain loaded 4710 Aspire which was $699 new in 2007, fall. So, you tend to get more for your money now. Waiting for the warranty is good, but things like memory upgrades via the rear panel should be totally allowed within warranty, and while the panel is off, get some lay - of - the - land! haha

Crazy idea, but, share some photos! There's this one magazine, title I can't recall at present, they took a side shot ACTUAL size, to print at the bottom of a page, then they shared large scale images of each side sporting ports, drives, output jacks, etc. That way you know how it might be of use to your needs, since the jacks of course are figured directly into the motherboard's layout engineering

Well you have a warranty, right? | Yup, only 5 days. I finally got through to Sony Customer Care after 2.5 hours on hold. They're sending me a box so they can repair/replace it. I didn't install anything on my VAIO that isn't installed on my fiance's Toshiba Satellite (2.0GHz processor, 2GB ram, Intel 2000? GC.) and the Toshiba works fine. I think the Hard-Drive wasn't properly connected when they built it. (as the HDD light doesn't come on when attempting to boot.) It's a neat little notebook, but it's pretty ridiculous that it already crapped out on me.

I got forms to file against Sony, I believe based on a mid to late 2000 Class Action lawsuit. Since the mobo was so cheap, and I got the lappy working on my own, I never sent them in, but it's worth checking to see if such things have happened, Sony's had their share of problems, but if they built it wrong, and a Class Action has been filed, it's good to know some details.
In this case, overheating due to poor heat sink design. I would tell you not all Sony products are bad, it's a big company, you know, but they spread themselves too thin in all areas of consumer electronics, and that hurts quality, end result

I feel for ya man Could see that you were well looking forward to it arriving and when something like this happens it just F***'s you right off As it is only 5 days, you considering cancelling the contract of sale and getting a different make? Know you were keen on the Sony but if it was me, I would have little confidence that the thing will not go wrong again, and possibly outside of warranty This post has been edited by marmoo on Thursday, Apr 12 2012, 07:56
