Why did Big Smoke and Ryder return? If they had left Sweet and CJ both would have been killed.

To keep the story line going after a brief disalusionment of Ryder and Big Smokes loyalty.
In my view they didn't need to return.
If when doing the mission CJ doesn't follow Sweet he can jump over the wall from the roof to the stairway CJ will be able to explore the city/state unfettered by the cops. so it stands to my reason that if the game wasn't programed the way it is Sweet and CJ could have gone home.

There was no need to keep it going here. They betray CJ in the next mission there was no point in it keeping the storyline going for one more mission.
