Hello I think this is the right place to post this but anyway, I am just wondering if it is worth me Upgrading my CPU.

I have been offered an Intel Core i7 860s (LGA 1156), I dont plan on upgrading my Motherboard and switching to 1155, 1366, 2011 etc. I plan to keep my MB and everything else in the System I just wonder if it is worth getting the Upgrade, I am currently running an Intel Core i5 650 (LGA 1156), and my main question is, should I bother, Will there be a massive Performance difference or would it just be a waste.

From the reviews I've found you will see a performance increase. Gaming performance will vary but should be better over all.
The question is how much is going to cost you?

$200 AUD, which is what I paid for my i5 a few years ago, it is Brand New also. It does sound a bit steep but it is cheaper than buying a new MB and CPU for the 1155/2011 Series.

It's a better performer, yes. The deciding factor is cost. How much does he want for it? Would you be willing to sell your current CPU to recoup some of the money?

Why not just keep the motherboard and upgrade to an i5 2500K if you can? I'm seeing a lot of gaming rigs with that CPU simply because it offers the best performance:price ratio. Apparently its quite overclockable too. The q6600 Of modern times

Because the CPU he has not is a Socket 1156 and the i5 2500K is a Socket 1155

I got a link to my board, the Biostar H55 HD, it's 1156 so you're not alone. I have the 550 i3 I bought for about $120. If prices do come down, it will serve you well for gaming, but ultimately the socket 1156 is doomed! At least there are the i5 and i7 first generations all available, and running DDR3 memory that's still current.

I finally set up mine with a 500GB HDD running Windows 8 Developer Preview, I had to get it formatted in XP Pro first, with just 2GB Ram, since 4GB proved too much for the XP to boot up with!

I'm having an issue getting the HD support via the board's own HDMI and DVI output, the i3 was expressly bought to support Intel HD video, and it should work fine, but I wound up getting it working with a video card, so if I had a non INTEL HD integrated processor, I'd still be in business anyway
