I recently played it for the first time last holiday season so I missed the hype when it happened but I don't find it boring at all. There are a few things that I wish they would have included but for the most part I love the gritty and dark atmosphere. I am a big fan of gritty crime flicks and I love NYC so maybe that is part of it. Each GTA captures the feel of it's location perfectly. Vice City captured 80s Miami, SA captured California and each location in the game had it's own feel to it. IV captured modern day NY perfectly and Alderney very much feels like North Jersey. New York is a gritty kind of city so the game reflects that.

The story is great plus if you know where to look there is plenty to do after you complete it. I was always one to make my own fun instead of relying on side missions anyway. There is nothing more than kicking cops off that tower in Alderney or provoking a shootout in Star Junction and hiding in burger shot seeing how long you can last.

I hope in V we get more of the off the wall elements of SA back but IV is still a great game.

Because they are disappointed for NOT being a Over-The-Top-Action Game like San Andreas was, and I saw complaints about There is nothing to do, after the story.

My opinion: I think it's the best Grand Theft Auto game in the series, and there are plenty things u can do after the story and I love the realism they put into IV.

Basically what Simon_V said.

After all the excitement and over-the-top features and missions from GTA SA people thought that they would see the same thing in GTA IV, and they were wrong. People complained and so R* gave us the DLCs for IV (TLAD and TBOGT) to try and bring a little bit of ridiculous fun from SA back most noticeably with TBOGT, and then people said it was too over the top. notify.gif

You just can't please everyone.

I loved GTA IV and it is my favorite GTA out of them all. I say that as long as you have an overactive imagination (like I have) you can have fun with even the most simplest of things.

The "boring/no fun" argument was just something people used and hopped on the bandwagon with. It's, of course, completely false.

The action in IV is just as hectic and crazy as previous GTAs, depending on how you play it.

Driving somewhere then shooting someone gets boring after a while. In SA you had weird missions like sneaking into casinos, shooting boats with air to ground missiles in your fighter jet, etc. IV just wasn't as exciting as SA in my opinion.

All games get boring after a while and GTA IV is no exception however the blind faith some GTA III era fanboys display makes me ashamed as a GTA fan for over 14 years.

One reason I find SA a bit overrated is people simply refuse to accept the faults it has. Of course GTA IV has them too, but I've got the balls to admit it atleast. Sure SA had more in terms of content, but GTA IV was far more refined right down to side missions.

I see GTA IV as somewhat of an under dog. SA had GTA III and VC to build from while GTA IV didn't. I like SA, but GTA IV was a more sustained and memorable experience IMO.

maybe because its basically like a realism simulator. in gta4 u get optional phone calls from friends every hour or so of gameplay who ask u to hang out. i mean really its like a chore and gets sooo annoying having to rightclick my mouse to say no. and its not like there is a sleep mode option on ur phone that u can turn on to disable incoming calls, so it gets really annoying!! plus theres no jetpack!!!!! i mean really if i wanted realism i would go outside and throw a rock.

now what made GTASA so fun is you were forced to eat every few hours of gameplay and u were forced to learn how to fly and forced to learn how to swim better and had to continuously go to the gym to exercise in order to progress through the storyline. it added sooo much depth to the game. i also thought it was so fun firing my SMG for hours trying to get the skill up. and i thought it was really cool how u were forced to answer calls from Cesar every 20 mins about the yay leaving san fierro, it really made u feel like u were in a living breathing world unlike gta4 AKA realism simulator 4.0

so what i hope they do with GTA5 is instead of making it another realism simulator like gta4, they add all the fun stuff from GTASA like forcing u to eat, forcing you to go to flight school, forcing you to hit the gym, forcing you learn how to swim, and RC plane missions.

For me, I enjoyed the game while it was newer, but something about it just never stuck with me once I had finished it, unlike the others. I just can't pinpoint it.

And no, I don't believe it is a lack of nostalgia, as it's been almost four years already since its release. The experience overall was just too different, which is definately good in a way, but just not as inviting as the other 3D games.

The tone was darker, and more focused on realism and character building than previous titles, the map was also (like NY) very block like, with various areas looking similar to others, people were used to San Andreas, which boasts the most varied map of the series.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree with you on this. I love GTA IV - I play it more than the others. But theres just something about it that loses its appeal - it feels a bit empty in some ways after the game is completed.

What irks me however is people pitting IV vs. SA when really it should be IV vs. SA & VC as there were features in SA that were also in VC but were not in IV.

The graphical detail in Liberty was absolutely amazing - jaw dropping. It still is now and makes the previous entries look like cartoons. The physics were a massive leap forward, life like and fun to play around with.

The story was good - but not as good as others make out I feel. Niko constantly sarcastically remarks how he'll do it (murder) for money - for someone so supposedly conflicted hes rather willing to accept this.

But then theres the issue of money itself - whats it for? I know I'm beating a dead horse here, particularly as IV was "rags to slightly better rags" but to omit the ability to purchase safehouses altogether (for example) was a bit, unfulfilling. It left little sense of achievement.

Many things were omitted from the III era for seemingly no reason. From a personal point of view, I wished to play as NY Cabbie in IV - little did I know of course that the Taxi Missions were omitted barring Roman's temporary ones.

To summarise - GTA IV was and is fantastic - it just feels a bit empty at the end of the game, like somethings missing.

I feel V will be a massive improvement on IV.

The variety of missions falls a long way behind its GTA3 era counterparts , in comparison to the olders games especially it lacks an atmosphere , a certain something that sets it apart from many other action games. Its got a strong storyline but a lot of the characters (aside from Francis and Dmitri) seemed quite uninspirational.

I've never found anything wrong with GTA IV's atmosphere. Sure it wasn't as zany as VC and SA, but I would put that down to those games being set in almost "wonderland" time periods a lot of people never got to experience.

GTA IV was a much more real interpretation of modern NYC seen from the eyes of an outsider. I felt the atmosphere GTA IV was going for was captured perfectly. I still remember the first day I played GTA IV and felt like I was in Niko's shoes because I've never been to NYC or the U.S either. It was unreal to get that overwhelming feeling in a video game.

The funny thing is I never really liked the dreary and dark atmosphere of LC in GTA III, but loved it in GTA IV. Don't know why.

Plenty things to do such as ? Jumping from the buildings? Making explosions? Killing peds ? That was fun when I played Vice City for the first time, now I want more opportunities, more things that you could do with your wild imagination and I'm not talking about Saints Row sh*t. GTA IV is super restricted, San Andreas has a much "freedom-ish" feel to it. If GTA IV is the best game for you, then you're a 12 years old kid, who thinks nothing more about graphics and realism.

I found GTA4 more fun than SA. I liked storyline more, gameplay overall. SA had many stuff you could do but still, somehow I didnt like it as GTA4.

Though I wish they kept a few things in many ways GTA 4 cut a lot of the fat out. As great as SA was I don't want to drive a tractor trailer at a snails pace across the countryside so it won't disconnect. I don't want to be a valet parking attendant or load the docks. SA was an incredible game and there was plenty of great stuff but there was also a lot of extra I had no desire to do.

Also if you look at Brucie's races, Steve's car thefts, Jacob's packages and the vigilante missions there is still plenty of extra to do. Also it has the best explosions in the game. I never get tired of throwing grenades and watching cars flip all over the place.

Also I never dressed CJ up crazy anyway so I didn't miss that aspect. He is a gangster and I made him look like one.

If you ignore the RPG-like features of GTA SA it still has a scale, variety, and depth of discoverability that GTA IV lacks. I found this video yesterday that reminds me why GTA SA would be the ultimate game if graphics and physics didn't go out of date. Someone makes up their own mission: start a new game, and immediately get in and out of Area 69 before starting the story. No cheats. Everything you see makes you want to play this game, and you're not even supposed to do this!

GTA IV is just as good. I've probably spent more time playing IV. But it's interesting in different ways.
