Geek Squad is a computer repair service that runs through Best Buy. I just handed over my laptop to them for repair and it will shipped to some facility. Apparently they needed my password to get onto my computer account. They asked if I had backed up my hdd and I said no. So basically, what this tells me is that at some point they're going to be looking at the sh*t I have on my computer. I do have some stuff I'd rather keep private, namely porn and some messed-up pics from /b/, but I also have uTorrent and a bunch of sh*t I've downloaded using it.
Are they going to find out about all of this? If they do, am I f*cked?
If they do look at my sh*t and try to get me in trouble, can I take legal action against them?
btw, all that needs to be repaired is the charger port, which came loose.

I worked with Dixons Retail (PC World) as a Tech Guy doing basically the same thing. Now legally they're only allowed to look at what is needed to get the job done, in this case, just your desktop after the motherboard's replaced to ensure it's working.
They no doubt will have a snoop around though, I used to, amusing to see what some folk keep on their laptops these days (seriously, wouldn't you look? Wouldn't you just be a tad curious?)
The ace you have though is they can't do anything with this information. They can't take you to court for illegal downloads, nothing of that sort. Because, they shouldn't be looking in the first place.
It was actually a 'Tech Guy' that apparently uncovered Mr Glitter and all his fiasco's, the guys lost his job cause of it. So I wouldn't worry about it too much, you'll get your motherboard replaced, but there is a 60-80% chance that during this process they'll wipe your hard drive.
So be prepared lol.

| QUOTE (ccrogers15 @ Wednesday, Feb 29 2012, 19:04) | Who do you think the judge would fine more? A pirate, or someone who invaded your privacy? Lol im sure the pirate.
EDIT: But if say by chance.. you have porn of yourself on there, and they "leak" it, you CAN sue them. | Not sure if sarcastic, or retarded. The guys working for geek squad don't give a sh*t if you pirate software, chances are they're running pirated software at home themselves.

I just won't ever be going to Geek Squad for any assistance again, I used them in the past, first two computers, that I remember specifics, I got further on my own and you guys would be quick to denounce what I can do on my own, but I'm much more confident then having to pay GS to do the same task! hahaha
You ever heard of USB flash storage, or burning a DVD or CD data disk? If not, problem solved...for future reference. Don't hand over private HDD data, it's like using a credit card in public, any risk is there, and Best Buy isn't above scrutiny themselves, They've used questionable media obtained to use for their software tools!

Your first mistake was taking it to Geek Squad. As for the porn, as long as it's not kiddie porn you'll be ok. To the piracy, I have yet to hear or read of a case where someone was actually arrested for having pirated software on their computer. However Geek Squad was sued by a company for using pirated software several years ago, but that's a different story. For your porn, as long as it's not on the desktop or some place else that obvious and easy for them to find, like in this sting, then you should be ok from them not finding it but that doesn't mean they might not snoop anyway. You all likely think I've got child porn on my PC, since I'm an elder here, eh? WELL, THINK AGAIN! haha
@Moonshield, This is comic relief, just a joke, but then, the Geeksquad are a joke, hope no one was serious about taking their computer there. Even I learned the hard way
