While I like the general Idea of Empire building, some of the ideas make me think it'd be too much like the "activities with friends" in GTA IV, but instead of "COUSIN, LETS GO BLOWING" we will get "BOSS, THE BUSINESS IS UNDER ATTACK!" and we'd have to go half way across the city, just to shoot some guys who are attacking the business. It'd be annoying. It was annoying in GTA SA and in VCS.
There's alot of ways R* can improve it to make it better though. Like. for instance, the ability to hire security for your business. Say you own a warehouse that is used for drug distribution. All you have to do is hire goons to protect it from rival gangs. As you gain more money, you can customize your goons with new clothes, guns, cars, ect. I think this would be a good way to balance it all out.
Also, since money seems like it will be an important part of the story, perhaps all the money we earn will have more purpose now. I think it would be awesome if we can spend our money on stuff like new cell phones, houses, cars, furniture, booze, clothes, security, ect. It would give us something to show for all our hard work.
I keep forgetting to update the ideas section (there's so many new ones that are good). I'll make it a point to do it sometime today.

I think it would pretty cool once you get mega loaded to be able to purchase skyscrapers and other large buildings. As a building owner you would typically get 3 different people that would approach you to run a business from your building. Which person you pick would directly effect crime in the immediate area of the building, ie. do you rent to a mob boss, regular business, law enforcement, etc.
Oh and like GTA VC, you would have to do a mission to secure the deal.

This I want to buy more things. Not like in IV just weapons, burger, hotdogs and drinking alcohol. There was not much things that you can buy in IV. Hopefully GTA V make this better.

"COUSIN, LETS GO BLOWING"
Wasn't that line in The Ballad of Gay Tony?
OT: I think your analogy would have been more appropriate if you had cited the defending-your-territory-from-rival-gang minigame in GTA-SA. That was annoying, to get these messages out of the blue "Your territory is being attacked" while you are in the middle of something else, halfway across the map, as you mentioned.

Mini-games related to drug dealing and negotiating would be a good addition. I hope the empire building is implemented. God, oh god, how I hope it's implemented.
Since R* said it's focus is on the mighty dollar, i'm hoping we'll be able to have our own empire that's what i loved about VC and VCS and even SA had abit of it, i loved feeling big time in VC.
would be cool if there was a continuous multiplayer empire building that never ends and you join up with buddies to build as much as you can meanwhile there are other players online also wanting to be the best because R* made some prize that whoever is the top Gang until GTA VI comes out will win (prize) so it's a constant struggle to be at the top especially since people can steal/take over your safe houses although u can hire NPC hench men to do certain missions and protect your properties.. I think that would be awesome and that some people will definitely go nuts trying to be the top gang.

I really like this idea. It could be like land grab in RDR. In V, they could make it so that you and your crew can take over businesses, and for every business you still own at the end of the day, you and your crew will earn a certain amount of XP. The catch is, of course, other players will try and take over your business. So you have to protect them. This could all be done in free roam. And yes, as we rank up, I think it would a good idea if we would hire NPC henchman to protect businesses when actual players aren't around.
Oh, and I updated the ideas section. Keep them coming guys!

And as I mentioned before I want advanced organizations, gang wars that include targeting key members to weaken your rival factions as well as activities that prompt FBI and DEA investigations which could lead to disassembling your organization as your members are taken up on charges. They could use LA Noire type judgement to assess the loyalty an strength of the people you choose to have involved in your organization. Weaker members may go down as snitches while loyal members can be outfitted with LAWYERS (who also range in quality and price), great lawyers may get your man acquitted. If found guilty, a key member may also be able to help expand your operation from the inside.

This could evolve into a long term economic / crime strategy game. You could be involved hands on, and/or you could delegate the work to NPCs and algortihms.
If players could hire NPC henchman and buy/rent other resources, the number of which you would maintain at a given level of outward cash flow, then the attacks and defense of safehouses and other businesses could be done statistically with the number of resources (henchmen, weapons, vehicles, bribes, etc) each player is willing to commit. Certain businesses would need more bribes or vehicles to defend, while others might need more brute force henchmen or specialized weapons.
It would be fun to watch the fights take place. There would always be a random factor, but generally, unbalanced attacks or defense would go to the side with superior resources in the fight. If the player on eahc side is also participating, they could work hard to try to affect the outcome.

^ Nice post! Judging by what you said, there is alot of potential in an empire building multiplayer mode. Still, I think it would be best suited for free roam only. It would give you more to do, just like land grab in RDR's free roam. I think it would be cool to actually earn xp (money) for every business you own at the end of the day in the game. Everyone would be fighting for control over the city...

I liked how in VC-MP the regions of the map would be held by groups of players, I remember having the most fun standing on the rooftop of Diaz's mansion with 3 other people just holdin it down as carloads of other players peeled in one by one.
If rockstar implemented that kind of gameplay into the multiplayer in V, I'd sh*t my pants and never get off my couch again
