Here are some ideas I had awhile back in a topic of mine about property and empire construction. (Just copied ansd pasted from my first post in that topic)
Evidence hinting at Empire propriety
In the trailer we see a man hammering in a Foreclosure/for sale sign in front of his house, now by no means dose this instantly mean we'll be buying houses and businesses but it is a minor hint. Also Rockstar released a statement saying the game will focus on "The pursuit of the Almighty Dollar..." which could mean in these economically challenged times running a criminal empire.
Also it seems the Protag/narrator has been around the world of crime for quite some time so he might want to use his knowledge to run the city.
How will it work?
Will rather simply for just buying a house. You'd walk up to the sign and click, say Triangle on the PS3 or Y on the X-Box 360 and the house is yours. Or you could call the number on the sign and buy it that way. (Idea provided by GTAGaming1)
For businesses it'd be the same initially, accept once you go in there'd be a icon where you could manage your business, what type of business will it be, will there be a cover business to cover any illegal activity there (more on this later) and things to improve the business such as additions to the building, and new equipment for what ever is going on there.
Unlike in VC the building won't be generic and dependant on what business type it is, it'll be an actual building that you'd buy that is for the most part static, you'd be able to change things about it , such as restore some dump of a house in the ghetto, or renovate some old Warehouse on the docks.
Types of Business that could be ran could be anything from drug smuggling stash houses, to even official businesses. Also official business could be used as a cover to take police attention off of what ever illegal activity is going on there, though you'll have less room to do what ever shady things you do there.
The Police Force... And You!
Running an illegal business will attract police heat, there'd be side missions that would focus on reducing this, or alternatively you could halt whatever is going on at a business for a time to reduce heat, but that means reduced profits too. Or alternatively you could pay the cops off.
After a business's heat reaches a certain level your business will be raided, you'll get a call or text from an employee there saying they need your help, and you can stop it, though that usually means more heat on your empire as a whole.
Legit businesses such as restaurants and the such, will not attract heat, unless they are a cover business for something else.
Other Gangs
Much like geting grief from the local police, other criminal empires will come to focus on your empire too, trying to take over business and turf that belongs to you.
When an attack begins you will much like with a raid, receive a call or text from an employee to get over there and help. You can help or lose a business to the game your choice, Lose money, or lose bullets?
There'd also be the opportunity via side missions to take out other gang's business or forge a treaty with a gang so they won't f*ck with your sh*t.
Why should it be in?
Well it seems GTAV will have a major focus on money, making it, spending it, etc. What better way for a criminal to make it that to rise up though the ranks of the criminal underworld that is Los Santos than to end up running a giant Empire and gang along with it?
So what do you fine people of GTAFourms think? Yay or Nay to running an empire?

Ha, yeah. Glad you liked the ideas. Now as for businesses I had some ideas.
Covers/Legal Ventures: -Restaurant/Pub -Night Club -Factory (Different things can be manufactured) -Car modification shop -Car Lot -Convenience Store -Pawn Shop (If there are home invasions, then this is a great place to sell what you stole.)
Illegal Business Ventures: -Drug Manufacturing (Different drugs can be made) -Drug Smuggling/Dealing (Can work in conjunction with your manufacture to cut out the middle man and make more cash) -Gun Running (Smuggling and selling rings) -Brothels -Chop Shop/Car boosting ring -Theft/Heist ring (not to much as a bussness as geting yout gang together, and robing places)
Of course you'd be able to do missions that lower heat from gangs, and the police, on top of ceaseing activitys there, there'd also be missions to do things related to your illegal busnesses (and some to your offical/cover ventures to such as bounceing at a club) like stealing cars that are wanted on a list like in SA for Car boosting, and drug smuggleing and sales (and they might go wrong of course) for yout drug rings.

Good ideas. Riffing off yours, I would add: Legal: Movie production Landlord, reinvesting and growing Taxi company Arms sales Construction Hotels Investing Illegal & Quasilegal:: Porn film production Counterfeit pharmaceuticals Protection Bribery of politicians Tax dodging Banker / fund manager / loan shark / Ponzi scheme It would be possible to get carried away and turn this into some kind of business / management / economic simulation. I know many people would say, "that is riduculous, this is GTA" etc. I agree that it should not be an essential part of the game, but decently rich empire building would give the game long-term replayability and could be used to generate leaderboard or Social Club metrics. If Rockstar was inclined, they could add businesses over time as (free) DLC.

| QUOTE (Davidx123 @ Sunday, May 27 2012, 12:55) | While I like the general Idea of Empire building, some of the ideas make me think it'd be too much like the "activities with friends" in GTA IV, but instead of "COUSIN, LETS GO BLOWING" we will get "BOSS, THE BUSINESS IS UNDER ATTACK!" and we'd have to go half way across the city, just to shoot some guys who are attacking the business. It'd be annoying. It was annoying in GTA SA and in VCS. | agree it can be annoying. this is why i like the assassins creed system. once you build up an assassin and assign him or her to a den, they then protect it from attack. this way, if you get giddy and buy up all assets straight away, you will be chasing around protecting them, but if you're patient and build up gang members to protect them you will have an easier time.
