I'm a big Bond fan and I'm pretty excited for this. Javier Barden will be a great villain, although I'm not too sure about the new Q. He's going to be be in his early 30's apparently, which just doesn't seem right somehow. I do like Daniel Craig, although my favourite Bond is Brosnan. I actually liked all the goofy gadgets and he had a bit more wit and charisma about him.

When I first read who the bloke who Q was gonna be, I also thought it wouldn't work. But then, Spooks (MI5 in the states) did a similar thing when they re-cast their tech master, and I warmed to the new one better than I did the old one. I am looking forward too see how this will work

Can't wait for this film! I'm a massive James Bond fan but I'm a bit disappointed that Quantum isn't involved in the storyline, but I still have high hopes.

I really was expecting to see more of Quantum as well. The story was picking up momentum fast and I really don't want another Fleming novel plucked out of the archive and done over like all Bonds pre-Daniel Craig.

Interesting to see that Q returns, maybe we'll see some gadgets but not too many I hope. This Ben Whimshaw guy, I'm not too sure on but I really liked his performance in Perfume: Story of A Murderer. This also leaves a continuity error as Q ages while Bond stays fresh. Probably my only major gripe of him being reintroduced.

Q returning younger would vibe with the theory some put out there that the titles of M, Q, and James Bond 007 are ambiguous and not unique to any one person. I don't know if I follow that at all but sometimes it feels like it could be that way.

Just thought I'd revive this topic with the recent release of the new Skyfall teaser trailer. What do you all think? A minute isn't much to go on, but it's enough.

Was quite surprised at the lack of any hint of a Bond theme tune, unless my ears are failing me. This way, it seems quite detached from the series. I don't know if that's a good thing. Also, Bond looks weathered in this film, which I really like - reminds me of the cynical old bastard we saw in the books. I've always thought Craig and Connery were the most accurate portrayals of Bond's character.

I have to say this is the only film I'm really looking forward to in 2012. I'm not revved about TDKR, and Avengers fell short for me because I haven't seen any of the previous "build-up" movies. I'm eager to see what Sam Mendes can do for us.

This is what I picked up from the trailer, too; Craig's portrayal of Bond is veering closer and closer to a truer version of the character, yet everything else surrounding the movie is veering farther from that special element that's been painted on the past twenty plus movies - especially the famous score - and it's hard to decide whether this is a good or not-so-good step in the franchise.

I respect the absence of ridiculous gadgets and the addition of more character focus as much as the next guy, but I do miss seeing the 007 traditions.

I think I (faintly) detected the Bond theme towards the end of the teaser, although they seem to have given a heavy modern/techno feel to it. Would like to hear an extended version before passing a judgement on it though.

I, too, miss seeing 007 rely on gadgets in certain cases as opposed to relying on just his instincts and fighting/survival skills in almost every situation. I don't mind their absence if the eye-widening action sequences are anything to go by, but the gadgets would add an extra something to it. That's what I feel, anyways.

James Bond has been getting worse and worse, If I would have watched The Skyfall Trailer without looking at the Title first (On Youtube) I would not of realised it was a new James Bond film at all!.

I'm sure anyone here would agree that Casino Royale - or even Quantum of Solace at that - could be easily degraded by the sheer quality of such masterpieces as The Man with the Golden Gun or Die Another Day.

Not to be confused with FALLING SKIES of course! I would take it to be a new James Bond game, not a film, but the books were already exhausted I thought? Time to move to new plots and adventures, with the new Bond of course. Since you guys were falling all over yourselves about the new Batman and the new Bond before, and I favor the past, I'd be shocked if you didn't like it, honestly!

If Q was John Cleese again from The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day in SKYFALL, then it would work, because of the comedy value which he showed in 1999 and 2002. Having a younger actor to play Q will not work at all, and when i heard that Q was going to return, immediately i thought John Cleese, funny, and suitable for the role of Q along side Desmond Llewelyn (which unfortuantely passed away after TWINE). And that is why John Cleese should be Q in SKYFALL

It isn't James Bond as we know (rather, knew) it, but I like the grit. As long as it's still quintessentially British, I'll watch and enjoy it. Casino Royale was great, Quantum of Solace also. I didn't buy into the wave of hatred for that film, and I won't on Skyfall (if there indeed is popular dislike) until I've seen it. But at the moment it doesn't look too bad. And forget about returning to the 70s, there won't be any more cheesy eyebrow raising or absurd suaveness. As great as it was, that's what we have Roger Moore for...

I thought it was common knowledge that the designations of Q and M aren't related to the actual people, but rather internal designations for those positions. If you watch the older movies M is a man, before being played by Dame Judi Dench.

QUOTE
A further inspiration for M was Maxwell Knight, head of MI5, who signed his memos as "M" and whom Fleming knew well.[1] The tradition of the head of MI6 signing their name with a single letter came from Mansfield Smith-Cumming, who would sign his initial "C" with green ink.

Source: M James Bond

Okay, seems it was due to MI6 tradition of the head signing with a single letter in the case of M.

QUOTE
Q is a fictional character in the James Bond novels and films. Q (standing for Quartermaster), like M, is a job title rather than a name

Source: Q

In the case of Q, it relates to the position of Quartermaster, which I was getting at:

John Cleese can't work as Q, these movies are before all other movies.
Q should be representing a younger Desmond Llewelyn because he is the original Q and this would be were he first came in.

CULVER CITY, Calif., July 12, 2012 – Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of SKYFALL™, the 23rd James Bond adventure, confirmed today that the character of Q will be making a welcome return to the Bond franchise and the role will be played by Ben Whishaw.

Whishaw becomes the fourth actor to play Bond’s quartermaster affectionately known as Q. The role began with Peter Burton as Major Boothroyd in Dr. No, followed by Desmond Llewelyn (in 17 Bond films between 1963-1999), and John Cleese (who appeared as Q’s assistant, R, in The World is Not Enough and was later promoted to Q in Die Another Day).

Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli commented, “It’s a real thrill to confirm the return of Q in SKYFALL™ played by the enormously talented Ben Whishaw. We are delighted to have this beloved character back in the series.”

Daniel Craig is back as Ian Fleming’s James Bond 007 in SKYFALL™, the 23rd adventure in the longest-running film franchise of all time. In SKYFALL™, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. The film is from Albert R. Broccoli’s EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment. Directed by Sam Mendes. Produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. Written by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and John Logan.

That's an understatement. He looked creepy in "No Country for Old Men". He reached a whole new level in this trailer.
