Republicans didn't regain control on the House until 2010. From 2003 until 2010, Democrats have controlled The House of Representatives and the Senate.
Nope. Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate for most of Bush's term; it was only in '06, when national dissatisfaction with Bush was sky-high, that Democrats picked up the house and knocked off enough Senate incumbents (including Lincoln Chafee, the only Republican Senator to oppose the Iraq War) to gain narrow control of both houses. However, at times, particularly with the rather archaic and complicated rules of the Senate (where a 60-vote supermajority is required for most anything, especially today), at times Democratic support was vital. IIRC, he needed it to pass his tax cut plan in '01 (not sure about '03), when the Senate was only two seats away from Democratic control.
But at the end of the day, most of the time, the bipartisan support Bush received was icing on the cake.

| QUOTE (Irviding @ Tuesday, Nov 15 2011, 16:28) | | QUOTE (sivispacem @ Tuesday, Nov 15 2011, 06:48) | | People are also very single-minded. Theentirety of Bush's first term in office was overshadowed by a single catestrophic event, which formed the guiding force for his first term. It begs the question- if 9/11 hadn't happened, would he even have survived for a second term? Im inclined to think not. |
Doubtful... that whole election was gigantic fear mongering bullsh*t. Did you know that Bush (probably Cheney actually, Bush isn't smart enough) ordered the DHS Secretary to raise the threat levels on election night in order to propel them to a win? The DHS secretary refused & resigned. | Evidence of this please? @svis: I think Bush would have still won in 2004 because his polls only dropped in relation to the War in Iraq, which wouldn't have happened either. However, we are speculating on What if... What if Al Gore had won the 2000 election, 9/11 had still happened, would the Gore have gone into Afghanistan and taken on Al Qaida? Then, would Gore have won again in 2004 depending on his reaction to 9/11? Would this have resulted in McCain/Palin winning in 2008 and Obama never coming onto the scene but securing a further 8 years for Blair in England? See, I can play the what if game too

| QUOTE (Iminicus @ Wednesday, Nov 16 2011, 02:49) | You link to the Huffington Post, a bastion of liberal bias in media. Well f*cking done. That proves nothing considering the hard on Arianna Huffington has at hating Bush.
Also, please point out where I was an asshole. I simply asked for evidence and I said please. You, sir, are the asshole. Go f*ck yourself. |
You are a f*cking idiot. Are you honestly trying to say that you doubt this ever happened? The article itself has a link to various other sources where he said this. I watched the interview of him on CNN back in 2009 saying this happened. Get your head out of your f*cking ass. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/21/us/21ridge.htmlhttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32501273/ns/us...t/#.TsQ1LvKgQS4Is that enough for you, or did it not happen since I linked to NY Times and MSNBC? Do you want the name of his book so you can take it out at your local library and find the exact page and read it yourself? This post has been edited by Irviding on Wednesday, Nov 16 2011, 22:13

Certainly the ones who broke away from Great Britain. Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison. Washington's head should have been placed up on London Bridge for revelation. The way Americans are taught, that they were given so much tax they could not bear it, is rubbish. Irving you are nothing but an Islamo-Liberal who is attempting to further subjugate the world to American rule, add more Pakis to our United Kingdom so you do not have to deal with them. I am no racist, colour of skin does not matter, the way they act does. They do not work. Furthermore, you go after political leaders who did the right thing. George W. Bush knew how to control the military, that is a fact. John Edwarts, his opponent, was a twit.

Um, what? Did he "support" slavery? Not really... he had slaves, sure, but he was no John C. Calhoun or Alexander Stevens. And the Indian killing was not really a Washington phenomenon. I wish people would become more educated on US history. Abe Lincoln owned slaves... really? | I agree with you Irviding. I visited Mount Vernon about a decade ago and it was really eye opening. Washington grew hemp up there and him and his fellow *cough* smoked that sh*t. He is alright in my book.

He did keep the US and the USSR from nuking each other.
That would've saved, I dunno, the entire human race? | Fixed that for you. The most overrated President IMO is Lincoln. The civil war which the south brought upon, is what ended slavery. He "proclaimed" the Emanicipation Proclamation 3 years after. I honor the man, but his presidency is just too overrated.

I honor the man, but his presidency is just too overrated. | Why? He was one of the greatest Presidents we ever had. The man preserved the union, plain and simple. The Emancipation Proclamation was a military strategy, not a political ploy. The homestead act bringing Germans/Scandinavians to the west, people who hated slavery, was one of the most ingenious things ever.
