| QUOTE (OchyGTA @ Friday, Sep 23 2011, 16:41) | | QUOTE (E.A.B. @ Friday, Sep 23 2011, 06:41) | Choose a major that is marketable
can't really see you getting anything with a Historian degree. You have to think of the job market.
And for the love of God don't do a ''liberal arts'' degree. I may be a freshman, but even *I* know that its a fools choice |
http://www.alec.co.uk/free-career-assessme...story-major.htm | They're quite generic roles that share similarities with any of the analytical social sciences. Someone with a degree in international relations, European studies, global affairs et cetera would have exactly the same career prospects (though perhaps with a little more direct employability). At the end of the day, though, employment is based on who you can become cosy with and get to know well during your degree. It's only science and engineering degrees which don't require at quite sizeable amount of palm-pressing and brown-nosing for one to be successful with.

Would you believe me if I was to say that I, bluesboyjr, am writing this from my PC in my room at the University of East Anglia right this very moment? What a small, small, pityfully small world. Having only started last month, I can't tell you that much, but it's allll gooooood. Nice accomodation, nice facilities, nice pubs n' clubs in the city. And funny Norfolk accents.

What did he make of Kent? Edit: I mean like night-life wise? Is it a lively campus? This post has been edited by OchyGTA on Tuesday, Oct 11 2011, 22:04

OH UEA IS WONDERFULLLLL. | I'm in the University Village, which means a 10 minute walk in each morning, but I'm a man, so it don't bother me none, and besides, my college had a 15 minute walk between the bus stop and the building, so eh. God I'm a lazy f*ck. And I'm doing Chemistry, so I can laugh at all you History bitches when you're all unemployed jk

I'm applying to university next year for 2013 entry. The unis I'm applying for are: Manchester, Liverpool, Sussex, Kent and Brighton and for Biology/Biological Sciences. All for different reasons. I strongly considered Neuroscience/Genetics but I'd rather a bit more breadth in my degree, but I'm hoping to do a MSc in either those at Imperial, UCL or Manchester, or go abroad to the USA or Canada if I can win a scholarship after my degree I'll be sort of a "mature student" when/if I start uni, though. I'll be 20 going on 21 and 23 when I graduate, but it doesn't bother me, people of all ages go to uni and I look young anyway. This post has been edited by Bad Girls on Tuesday, Nov 1 2011, 17:57

I wouldn't worry about your age one bit, there's lots of people that take gap years between sixth form and uni. I'm currently in my third (and final) year and it's kicking my arse right now. The free time I enjoyed in first and second year is almost completely gone and my time is spent between lectures, reading for my dissertation and other essays, lecture notes and tutorial work. I just can't seem to get ahead of the work load right now. How I wish that my course had a reading week.

I recently started a course at University, I'm 22 so I'm 4 years older than most of the people on my course, I have not had a problem with getting along everybody. We all have common interests so I've had a whale of a time so far...it is kind of shocking being with people who have never heard of Mighty Max and/or never played GTA: Vice City though

I'll be applying for uni this year. I'm hoping to take up English Literature, although one or two of my choices offer a BA English, which covers literature, language and creative writing. My main choices are relatively close to home (SE Wales) but thankfully there's some distance between home and uni.
At the moment I have BCC (3 marks off BBC), with the B in English - I nearly full-marked the coursework, but didn't do too hot in the exam so I'm resitting that, along with my AS ICT and Media exams.
My choices are Cardiff, Swansea, Glamorgan, Exeter and I'm debating my fifth. Cardiff are pretty tight with resits though, so Swansea might be my firm and Glam my back-up.
I went to Glam open day the other day and was very surprised; the entry requirements for the English course are BCC, which is do-able, so I didn't have high hopes for the uni. But the campus is brilliant; new halls, new union and the course looks good (100% employment rate 6 months after grad.) with teachers including published authors such as Philip Gross. Plus the campus is 20 minutes away from Cardiff, so there's a balance of community on campus and the city just down the road.

Nice. lol. But really, never played GTAVC?? It's my year/generation that are mostly off to uni this year and I've always thought everyone knew what VC was, although SA was much, much more popular. It came out when we were in year 7 afterall! And yeah, I've never known any mature student to worry about fitting in, so I'm not really worried much anymore. Plus, you work with people of all ages for the rest of your life anyway. lol. | QUOTE (JoeyLeone25) | | Nice to see that people are still looking to apply for university and that the increased, extortionate fee's haven't put too many people off, well aside from myself. After finishing a Post-Graduate Degree I wanted to head straight back to yet another year of university (once you've done freshers week four times, it starts to get old), but I've had to take a year out building up the old savings account, and now while I'm still looking to complete the PGCE come next September, my attitude will probably deviate over the coming months. |
The fees aren't that bad of a deal, though. If you're talking about the 9k tuition fees raise. There's more grants and a bigger loan available (I think?) and you don't pay the student loan back until you're on over £21k anyway in the form of a tax, rather than an actual debt. As long as I don't have to pay upfront or be literally crippled in real debt, I'm OK I guess. Isn't your PGCE subsided by the government, though? I know that post-graduate studies are usually much more expensive compared to undergraduate degrees because there's no student loan and no government subsidies in most cases, but some areas are an exception..

Which is principally no different to the old system, except the repayment threshold is higher. Regardless, all the tuition fees rise is going to do is create a new generation of private universities who can undercut the public sector on cost whilst delivering a higher quality of education. The one that exists in the current system- Buckingham- is already top for student satisfaction, employment prospects and teaching ratios.
