Recently I've been looking at the forum background and I discovered that one of the random shapes looks like a Centaur sticking it's tongue out.

...What compels you to say things like that?^

Like to thank everyone for the church thing and Gareth, i would go to simply get a feel, see what it's like.

Another question:
Can anyone find the comedian topic where everyone posted videos of stand-up (No not Escelehgo's topic). I am really keen for some comedy.

I tried, but I don't know how you saw a Centaur sticking it's tongue out.

My brain has become a mushy mess after seeing this image:

So, my somewhat obvious question is how is this possible? The only thing I can think of is that there is a really strong wind going against the plane.

Yh I'd guess at a strong wind, and maybe it's not a real plane. Well it looks like one but I mean maybe it's been stripped down to it's bare bones and it's way lighter than it should be and hence the ease at which it flies away. Another possibility is, seeing as it's at an airfield/airport that out of frame a large commercial jet has just turned it's engines on and that plane got caught in the area behind. These are just guesses, not much science involved. tounge.gif

It's not a real plane. the propeller isn't even moving*. Some kind of model or inflatable or something being blown away by the wind.

*Unless by some chance the shutter speed of the camera is matching the rate of revolutions of the propeller, which isn't as far fetched as it might seem. There are numerous videos of helicopters flying "with stationary rotor blades" where the same thing has happened.

Or it was on a treadmill.

Why must the propeller be turning.
Most aerodromes have small planes and if you've seen the small craft in storage they are litterly tied to the ground to prevent this sort of thing on gusty days.

There's no pilot either.

Looks like it's just being lifted as a result of a really strong, gusty headwind. Bit stupid of them not to strap it down in that sort of weather though.

I think it is a real plane but seeing as it's only a small one it probably doesn't weigh that much. The propeller isn't moving because the plane isn't running. As you can see, there's no pilot. I think Stu might be on to something with the idea of a larger jet perhaps blowing it away or something. I would imagine that no matter how much that plane weighs, you'd still need a significant amount of power to lift it so easily. Then again, some coastal airports have some pretty heavy wind.

Edit: Cheers for the answers fellas. I had no idea that this kind of thing happened.

Okay I guess I was wrong about it having to be a model, must be a hell of a strong wind though. It makes the whole jet idea seem pretty plausible, as well as giving a reason for why someone's just randomly filming a stationary plane when it blows away.

Jet engines are pretty strong too.

A plane moves at a fast speed in order to take off using the lift generated by air passing over the wings. Presumably, if the wind is fast enough and coming directly towards the plane while stationary, it will cause lift on the wings in much the same way as a normal take-off, even without the flaps down.

You'd need a pretty strong wind- the stall speed (which you'd need to exceed to generate enough lift to sustain flight) on a light aircraft like a Cessna 182 is around 60mph. Perfectly possible to have a sustained enough ~75-80mph wind that would provide enough lift to pluck one from the ground.
