Average price of regular 87 octane gas in my city today is $3.15 and some in town as low as $3.04. Add about 12 cents for mid grade 89 and another 12 cents for premium 93.

so that works out at 56p a litre so that's nothing to moan about, it could probably double and its still cheap.

but we have higher grades, its 95 normal and 97 super unleaded i think. also i think the diesel is better quality in europe.

If you are going to start an argument based on pedantry, at least check your facts. The European RON and US systems use different benchmarks to measure Octane level so the US 89 is about equivalent to 95.

No, the States use AKI. Our 95 Unleaded is between Midgrade and Premium in the US (91 octane), while US Premium is 97 Unleaded here.
We have in Europe what's called V-Power Racing - that's 99 octane in the EU and 94 octane in the US respectively.
The Regular in the States is 87, but in Europe it would be 91 Unleaded.

Some places here will sell anywhere from 105 to 113 octane (racing fuel) and it's about $8-9/gallon. No actual set price on it. Very high alcohol content so it smells like moonshine.

V-Power Racing is $7.50 a gallon, but then, regular unleaded is $6.52. Without all the EU taxes and duties it would be about $4 a gallon in the States I'd say.

There are usually fuel depots at racing circuits that sell ultra-high octane fuels. I know for a fact there's one opposite the main paddock complex at Silverstone that sells 103 octane race fuel but its hideously expensive- £3.05 a litre so about £14 a gallon. The highest octane road fuel I've ever seen is 102 (BP Ultimate 102) but they discontinued that some years ago which was about £2.50 a litre back in 2007-8. I ran it a few times in my Corrado and S4, but never really noticed that much of a difference over Shell V-Power which is my fuel of choice for petrol engined cars. I've seen 117 octane somewhere but I can't for the life of me remember where- may have been Santa Pod raceway.

The US AKI system seems to be base on an average between MON and RON ratings- 85 under MON is 90 under AKI and 95 under RON, but of course its not actually that simple in reality as the methods for measuring RON and MON are entirely different.
