Played a PS1 demo in '97 or 98 I think, which led me to get it asap. I remember it just being sh*t loads of fun; getting pals around to play it and seeing who could murder the most people in increasingly inventive ways. Of course it's aged, but GTA back then still holds fond memories for me – they should release a sequel.

You know R* made a lot of sequels, don't you? GTA 2, GTA III, ...

Really?! Holy sh*t, where have I been?!

Started with GTA on the PS1, then London '69 followed by GTA2.

When GTA III came out I wasn't that bothered with it until I realised it wasn't top down, then I was obsessed.

For VC, SA and IV I was waiting outside the games store at 7am for the doors to open so I could get my copy with my pre-order receipt. I remember pretending to be ill when VC came out so I could stay at home and play it. My mum was pissed when she came home from work at lunch to see if I was ok only to find that I had hooked my PS2 up to the widescreen in the living room.

I don't know why but I never bothered with LCS or VCS. I wish I could get hold of a PS2 now so I could play them whilst we wait for V to be announced.

And I never bothered with handhelds so I've never played Advance or CTW.

I started with GTA 1, way back when it was released, but when gta 2 was released, my pc could not handle it, so i played it until i got a new pc, but then, my new pc supported San Andreas already, so i played 1, SA, then VC, then III, then 2, then i bought a ps2, and started playing, vcs, and lcs, now i want to play Chinatown Wars.

I guess technically I started with GTA1. I played it a little bit here and there in my web site design class in high school since someone was generous enough to install it on all the lab computers. That was around 2000 I think, but I didn't know what I was doing, no maps, no instructions, so I just drove around. I didn't actually start playing it seriously until a week ago when I finally got the R* free download to work on my computer.

Other than that I didn't start playing GTA until February '08 when I opened the trilogy pack. I bought in in 2006/07, can't remember which, but I didn't have time for it until I finished school. Still feel like a late-comer to the series since I missed out on all the fun when they were first released, but honestly I don't even remember hearing about the series again until San Andreas when X-play did a review of it. By then I was so busy with other stuff I didn't bother with it until '08 like I said.

My good friend had GTA 1 and the London packs and I would go to his place and play for hours, but at the time I didn't have a PC that would run it. In 2000 I got a Dreamcast and promptly went out and bought GTA 2 and have bought ALL of the following GTA's on release day, (except Advance, and I may have been a day or two behind on III).

I started with GTA 1 back in 1998 and have played every GTA in the order of release. Only ones I haven't played are London 61 and GTAA.

Hard to believe it's been 14 years. Only feels like yesterday myself and a mate took a copy of GTA 1 from his brother and played it on the PS1 for the first time. It's come along away.

My story is similar to many others, a friend had a burned copy and I immediately went and bought the real deal. What fun. Been a GTA fan ever since. Weird to think the series will be 20 years old in another five short years.

I started with GTA III when it was released in 2001, but the second GTA I played was GTA 1 (also in 2001).
I remember I begged my mom to buy it for me because I thought it'd be cool!

I popped it in, and I was actually let down because of the graphics.

Jesus, if I had a chance, I'd smack my 10 year old self in the face for returning it to Gamestop -_-

Yeah I've been with GTA since the first game. The year it came out in 1997 when I was 9. We just moved house and my brother lent us the game for a bit. I liked the game, and have played and finished every GTA in the order they have come out ever since and my favourite GTA to this day is still GTA 2

I was about 13 when it came out. I remember it how "edgy" it seemed back then (anyone else remember the controversy?), every though really it's no more violent than a lot of old 2D games but just the whole violent criminal aspect (games were still mostly thought of as a kids thing back then). I remember playing the demo and eventually getting a friend to lend it to me and my dad walking in and saying "What's this about, stealing cars? You shouldn't be playing crap games like this." Although he didn't actually stop me playing I don't think, in fact it was probably just him being a grumpy old git, I really wish I'd been less afraid of my parents reaction to things like this. But this is probably why I didn't end up get round to buying for myself until several years later when I was older (after all it does have an 18 certificate on the box). Of course some kids played it when they were under 10 without their parents batting an eyelid (like some of the people in this thread it seems).

God, my parents didn't even like me watching The Simpsons when I was that age. And I had to play a Sega Master System (even though the Mega Drive and SNES were out)

Started with GTA2 in 99 in my electronics class in high school. Few months after VC came out, I pirated that and beat it. Then I pirated III and barely played it (couldn't get into the story). I bought SA a few days after launch and then went back and bought III and the Classics Collection version of GTA, London 1969, and GTA2. Then I finally found a copy of VC to buy, and spent forever looking for GTA Advance. After that, I bought an Xbox 360 just for the IV DLCs and a copy of IV. Then I got the gamecard version of TLaD. Then I got the PC version (like all my other GTAs), and EfLC PC version. Then I went back and bought all the other copies of GTA I didn't have yet (PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox1, Dreamcast, GameBoy, iOS). Now I have the full collection other than EfLC PS3, and GTA3 Android.
