I agree with you, about 35% of all DLCs were already on disc when the game was released, 65% came through updates.
But regarding MP crashes, on SR2 there was a huge issue about DLCs and updates, if your co-op partner and you have different versions of the game, both of you would crash to desktop.
SRTT engine is just an updated version of SR2 engine.

I haven't played SR1 or 2, but between the games that came out in 2011, SR3 was in my GOTY list. Start seeing behind sequels and prequels and enjoy the game, rather than worrying about it.

In my opinion, SR3 is only fun when you do co-op. Playing on your own is just boring; yes it isn't the best of games but I enjoyed doing co-op
