I agree, I'd love to play this, but I'm kinda on the edge of whether or not I should pre-order or pay full price for this or not.
That's the Sleeping Dogs map, in case it hasn't been posted. I'm not so sure, it looks kinda small, and you can get a sense of scale if you watch one of the newer videos that has a radar on it showing the streets. I wouldn't say it's a big map, but I suppose the size of the map doesn't count as long as there's enough to do on it (that's mainly what I'm worried about, I don't want to find myself bored with it after finishing the story). And the environment does look detailed, so I guess they just sacrificed map size for quality of the city.
Mike Scupa, the leading design director working on Sleeping Dogs, has told the Official PlayStation Magazine that, “A large portion of our game takes place on foot and our driving is very action based.”
“We really wanted to focus on a very streamlined and gameplay centric world layout. We really tried to pack the island with many different kinds of stuff as possible. I think our size is fairly competitive with other open world titles,” he then went on to explain.
Jeff O’Connell, who is the senior executive producer on the gamer, added, “Your character is very powerful, an action hero where you can do all these things we didn’t want you to have to go too far to be able to do those things"
The game world might be smaller than that seen in previous True Crime games or in the rival Grand Theft Auto franchise from Rockstar, but the density of interesting content will be higher.
Sleeping Dogs will put the player in the role of Detective Wei Shen, a police officer from San Francisco who is sent to help the force in Honk Kong deal with the Triads by going undercover.
Players will have to deal with a number of complex situations, balancing their ability to gain the trust of the crime syndicate with the need to protect civilians and stay clear of major criminal activity.
The game will use an open-world structure and a third-person perspective.
Sleeping Dogs will be launched on the PC, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 on August 14 in North America and three days later in Europe.
I'm not sure if they will be able to make the city more detailed than IV's.But I hope the interesting stuff factor will be higher like they said, since IV barely had any easter eggs and stuff.
Exactly mate. It's not about how big it is, it's about what you do with it
Haha, exactly I've decided I'll pre-order it today or tomorrow, probably from GameStop for the new assault rifle, new cop car, extra mission, and a SWAT outfit. I think that looks like it's gonna be worth it the most over the other two, since they both just add on some new fighting styles and fighting outfits, and only one has a mission.

I fear GTA V will still have the clunky movement which really annoys me in IV. Sleeping Dogs looks to be smooth... With awesome shooting, free running, driving, fighting, map, clothes, cars, bikes, slow-mo....

I honestly have good hopes that the movement and controls in GTA V will not be as clunky as GTA IV, maybe something a little more like Max Payne 3. But yeah, Sleeping Dogs is gonna be a good game to play through while waiting, it looks like there's a lot to do. And I've always loved the Hong Kong cinema action films "Hard Boiled" and "The Killer," so I know this is gonna be something I'll enjoy.
Anyone have any idea on what radio stations might be in the game? I've heard some drum n' bass and rap, but I wonder what else they'll include. 80s pop (my favorite kind of music )perhaps? In one of the previews, they showed a quick clip of the karaoke activity, and the lyrics matched "I Ran" by A Flock of Seagulls.
Finlally ordered it on the PC, £23 so not much of a loss if i dislike it( i hate green man gaming, just a day later( today) they have it for £20 )
So far, this is how i rate some of the game mechanics( i know its not been released ,but judging from videos and will be good for me to see how i have changed my views after i have played it):
Fighting: 7/10, sure it looks good and has some good moves, but it has that lack of difficulty, i mean when you have like 4 or 5 guys around you its just quite easy from the looks of it, i mean its like only 1 person attacks at a time and when they attack they are red and their moves are like slowed down a little, making it easy to counter. I hope this is removed and its more of a challenge.
driving:5/10, guess it fits the game, and that is good for it but i just dislike arcade driving mechanics that get old very quick. crashes seem average as well.
map 6/10: small but seems quite varied( not that much), got a feeling it will get old.
shooting:7/10: typical shooting, nothing good or bad.
Parkour: 9/10. yep
customisation of cloths: very good
graphics: 7/10: the city at night looks very good, day time its also good but average, cars look quite low standard.
I would have preferred some game-play that involves just some free roaming, like driving thoguh thecity. Hoep one is released.
If i have hurt your feelings, whatever.
( i typically do this with most games im looking forward too)

2 rap stations were confirmed, some cantonese stations, possibly some drum & bass... Don't worry about the music, it'll be good, trust me

How about twenty minutes of gameplay?
First part is old, shows the protagonist going after that one dude. Second video is brand new. Is probably gonna be a real nice substitute for GTA V, which i dont believe for a second...will come out this year.

Has any open-world game been capable of spawning thousands of NPC's at any one time?
I'm gonna assume you'll be quite disappointed with GTA V, too.

This game will have a much smaller map than IV (i think), should be more optimised as it's more modern, and they keep saying how the city will be full of life, it'll have density and activity etc. Clearly, it's not.
Damn, those pop-ups are pretty nasty. I don't know, but the game just seems unpolished to me. From the awkward glitches (people standing sideways on bikes, people turning from black to white on the streets) to the stiff-looking handling to the vehicles (this seems strange as the game is being developed by a bunch of guys who have made racing games). Also, not falling of your bike while going 100 mph and crashing into a wall looks a bit strange. Do anyone know if the whole map is accessible, because it does indeed look very small for a game nowadays. I'm probably gonna pick up this game sometime if it gets decent reviews, but until then I'm just gonna chillax on the fence.

GTA IV had PLENTY of NPCs walking around.
What i want to know is, if we get complete freedom in this game. With that i mean...can i attack anyone? Or only bad guys? I haven't seen it in one video yet..where the player is causing complete chaos.

Yeah, you can attack civilians but you lose "cop points" @Luigi's The gameplay is from January and the bugs have been reported fixed

I'm liking Remix's signature.
On-topic; I've noticed that UFG have created some pretty cool cars to put in the game. I still think it would have been better if you could store stolen vehicles because I'm pretty sure you can't purchase a SWAT van
