Okay, I was watching the World Cup opening sequence and I was wondering if there is anybody in these forums who is South African, lives in South Africa or something like that and what you thought of having the world's biggest sporting event held in your country?

Apologies if a thread like this allready exists.

Not sure if we have any South African members, at least who read/post in Sports Discussion.

It's quite a milestone however in two ways - one, it's the first time Africa as a continent to get the World Cup (for football; SA hosted the Rugby World Cup in 1995) and for another, it shows how far South Africa has come since being an international pariah during the apartheid era.

We do have a pinned World Cup discussion thread but this was a specific question, and if there are any South Africans who would want to weigh in on this I'd like for them to have that opportunity. Keep the general WC football discussion in the pinned topic however.

Here's some interesting reading. Perhaps the World Cup is being met with relative apathy by South Africans?

That is an interesting read. They did quickly quiet down, that being said it'd be a different story if that ball didn't hit the post though.
