So I was at the junkyard today doing my usual redneck rummaging, and while leaving, in came something that caught my eye. A man drove in in an 86 E28 535i with the intent of scrapping it. Said he was moving to Florida in a few days and had nowhere to keep it. Nothing majorly wrong with it either. Has some dents in the bodywork, a few seals leak and need replaced (rear door and maybe sunroof), has a slight miss (needs a tuneup and possibly a new fuel filter), and could have anywhere between 240k-270k miles on it. But overall, nothing majorly wrong with it. Still runs fairly strong (Guy said he had it up to 100 mph on the way over there). So I ran home to grab some cash and 15 minutes later was the proud owner of this gem. Only paid $200 for it (£122 for you British tossers ) which is actually about 60 bucks LESS than he would have got if he had gone ahead and scrapped it. Did some 180's in the parking lot and drove it home. Owner claimed he put a lot of time and money into it and was glad to see it go to someone who could use it rather than it be crushed. It has an LSD rear end, a proper 5 speed manual, power everything, a 3.4l I6 rated at a screaming 182 ponies, and (most importantly) a CLEAR TITLE. I think it should be quite fun after I work out the bugs.

Wow that a steal, too bad it's not an E34 though. I bet the seats are so soft and comfortable, I'm jealous. But now we can be BMW project buddies, I've got an E36 that needs work.

Did that generation have the horribly unreliable LCD screens?

I prefer the E28 tbh. Try and find an E34 535i with a 5 speed and a limited slip rear. Always had a thing for old bimmers anyway and the older the BMW, the more I like it, and the more I'll end up spending on repairs, haha.

Seats aren't really all that soft and comfortable. Not super hard either, just average. At least they're leather though. Seats have cracks but really aren't all that bad. Power stuff still works for them (for now at least). There's plenty of room in them and my 6'5" 300+ lbs. frame.

Center mount exhaust. Will be ditching the cat and replacing the muffler with something cheap that's 1 in 2 out so I can keep the stock exhaust position and the stock tips (an E28 trademark). And before someone bitches about me not buying some high dollar stainless bling setup, remember this is a 200 dollar car, I'm not buying an exhaust that's worth more than it.



Interior's not too bad for a 200 dollar car. Remember this thing was headed to the shredder so the PO didn't bother cleaning it up any. The panel that goes on the dash under the steering wheel is in the trunk and will be replaced as soon as I buy the retaining clips for it. And what LCD stuff are you talking about? It does have an LCD HUD (that ACTUALLY WORKS!) next to the tac if that's what you're talking about. Also has some little board up top next to the rear view mirror telling me about seatbelts and lights that work. Does have a security system buy I'm not sure how much of it works. One of the rear windows doesn't work but as long as the fronts and the sunroof work, I'm not too bothered. There is a definitely a leak somewhere as the passenger floorboard is full of water.

Overally not too bad. Will hopefully be going to the PO's house today to pick up the factory tool kit.

@Oogie - That's my friends 88 Crew cab 1 ton chevy utility truck that he uses as a parts chaser. We'll be doing a dually conversion on it soon as well as putting on a wheel lift. Has a tbi 350 and an SM465 Muncie 4 speed. Truck is mega huge. 164.5" wheelbase and tips the scales at over 6k. Will probably weigh over 9k when it's a dually tow truck.

The good, bad and the ugly...

So I have water in both passenger floorboards and sh*t's starting to mold. I need to replace both passenger door frame seals. And pelican parts has them for sale for $113.50 for the rear and $131.25 for the front. f*ck THAT! I'll be buying a water proof car cover for 50 bucks or so until I can come up with a (hopefully much cheaper) fix. And how should I go about cleaning mold off? It's on my back seat (which is leather), both floorpans and front door panel all on the passenger side. Maybe some kind of industrial cleaner? Will a decent leather cleaner from an autoparts store work for the seats? If this was anything else I'd have the interior gutted by now and called it good.

I'm sure you could get some used door seals shipped to you from some BMW forums. And I think alcohol or ammonia gets rid of mold. Put some in a spray bottle, spray it on and leave a fan running to constantly blow air over it. Scrub and repeat.

As I said on FB, congrats on the Bimmer. $200 is a f*ckin steal, no matter what condition it's in as long as it's running. I'd beat the sh*t out of it for sure

Oh, and that center exhaust is bad ass. Put a fart canon on it and rig it up to shoot out some flames to troll people

I like the exhaust but I think I'll do something a bit more high flow than oem. I'm thinking of going 2.5" from the 02 sensor back and using a small 6" long 1 in 2 out race muffler and reusing the stock tips. Have it all in the same place as it is now and all. Wondering what kind of money the muffler shop would give me for the stock cat as I'll be ripping it off as well.

1-in 2-out cherry bomb extreme which is about 55 bucks, 2.5" in and 2.25" out and painted go-fast red.



Or a performance curve single chamber muffler that's also 2.5" in and dual 2.25" out which is only 25 bucks online and ceramic coated.



Maybe something I treat myself to for my birthday in april.


Found out doing a full tuneup on this thing is going to cost me nearly 200 bucks (I swear no one but Bosch and Denso make oem parts for these things) which is about 2-3 what a full tuneup on a Chevy small block or something similar that I would be used to doing one on would be. And I just don't have that kind of money right now. Going to see what I can cleanup and reuse and still hopefully cure the miss it has.

edit - would be about 300 bucks to do a tuneup buying parts from a normal parts store like advance (the original 200 was adding stuff up online). Either way, just way out of my price range atm. I'll just clean up the connections as best I can. It's still a drivable car so I'm not too fussed.

Also bought a water proof car cover for 30 bucks to keep it dry.

Bent my (only) key today trying to open the trunk. It's supposedly a fairly common problem. Called around to several places to see if they could copy it and they all said they couldn't. So looks like I'll be heading by a specialty locksmith place tomorrow to hopefully have it copied. Afraid to lock the car up til I get it sorted out.

Going to meet the PO tommorrow to go pick up the factory toolkit and a spare rebuilt gauger cluster.

And my car cover I bought today before the huge downpour.

30 bucks well spent me thinks. Hopefully it doesn't get stolen.
