(Removing the white background)

user posted image

(ANY VERSION)

I bet most of the GTAForums users know how to make images transparent.
Like it says in the title of this topic, this is for the beginners - so it's gonna teach novice
Photoshop users how to do it, so they don't have to request it.

We're gonna start with this image:

Let's remove the white background:

STEP NUMBER
INSTRUCTIONS
SCREENSHOTS
Step 1Open Adobe Photoshop and import your image.
-
Step 2Double click on your image layer to unlock it.Click OK.
Click->Click
Step 3Pick the "Magic wand" tool.
Click
Step 4Click on the background you want to remove to make a selection.
Click
Step 5Press the Delete key on your keyboard to delete the background.
Click
Step 6Press CTRL and D on your keyboard to deselect. Save it as a PNG file format.
-

Here's the final result:

The edges turned out really bad, let's edit them!
(Let's add an inner stroke)

user posted image

To add a stroke, Right click on your image layer and go to blending options.
Choose the "stroke", make the color similar to the edge of your original image,
and use the settings:

• Size: 1px
• Position: Inside
• Blend mode: Normal
• Opacity: 100%
• Fill Type: Color

You should get something like this:
(Save it as a PNG file)

Is there a poliganal select tool or such (maybe an alternative) in PS? (Ie it gives you the ability to physically draw in each point of the marquee? )
Thats what I use in Fireworks to make a selection around the thing I want to delete (and so far thats by far the best way Ive found of doing it for me anyway)

Using a wand is lazy, and will produce generally bad results, as it wont remove (in your case) where the black edge has blended with the white background, so your left with a grey halo around every edge.

I know that wand doesn't produce very good results, but when you mask the edges a little bit - it's not that bad.

I use the wand most of the time, but masking does produce better results. And you can always use the lasso to add or take from the wand selection to fix it. The Magic Wand is not lazy.

But anyway, good beginner tut.

Here are 2 nice free plugins for Windows which I have found quite useful time-to-time to make some complex images transparent fast.
Called EraserClassic and EraserGenuine:
http://www.mehdiplugins.com/english/eraserclassic.htm
http://www.mehdiplugins.com/english/erasergenuine.htm

They should work on any .8b plugin host, tested with Corel Photo-Paint, Photoshop CS11, Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7.04...and IrfanView.

The person who asked the question is banned. Why did you bump the topic to answer to a person who clearly won't see this topic again?

Another quick tip - as opposed to using the inner stroke. Once the background color is removed, go to the Layer menu. Layer>Matting>Defringe. Usually a one or two pixel setting will do the trick.
