I'd say that in a post 9/11 US, it would be next to impossible to hijack a plane.

somehow I don't think it's that difficult...

They wouldn't necessarily have to hijack a plane to destroy the tower. They could purchase a small, private aircraft like a prop Cessna or something and load it up with plastic explosives, then crash that.

Oh yeah, because they never thought of that, right? You can't just purchase a Cessna and then start flying it around. Where are you going to take off from? And as soon as the Air Force sees an unidentified and unregistered aircraft flying into the city, you'll be forced down.

Diablo, it is next to impossible to hijack an aircraft now. Cabin doors are sealed to within an inch of their lives, many pilots carry guns, etc.

You would have to be lucky to even get near the tower in a plane before you got shot down, it did happen once and i am certain they did everything possible to put safeguards so it wouldn't happen again.

am I the only one who's going to chuckle for a moment if they fly another plane into this new tower?

I mean it'll be horrible and all.
but I probably won't be able to stop myself from having a laugh at the ironic arrogance of it.

damn, I've probably jinxed it now...

Ah but you can get your PPL, buy a plane, register it and fly it. It's just whether they think you're suspicious enough beforehand to take you down.

To be fair, they'd be better using a heli if they're doing that. Nobody bats an eyelid over a low flying heli round there.

Or just blowing it up conventionally anyway.

As for hijacking, who says it has to be an external force hijacking? Why not someone already in the cockpit?

I feel you may want to reconsider the use of the world "squashed". Because it's not particularly apt or appropriate.

That's what I've always thought. I mean if it's so hard to get in the cock-pits now, if you get a rogue pilot then you're in big trouble. He dispatches his co-pilot, knocks him out or whatever, then he's got full control of the plane. I doubt if a plane takes off from JFK or Newark that the airforce would have time to stop a plane that goes off course before it reaches the heart of NYC.

It's certainly a lot harder, but it's far from impossible.

Interestingly enough I was watching a documentary on 9/11, the atermath of the event both in New York, outside of the city in the US, and in places overseas (the war that was sparked afterwards as well), but most importantly how architects and developers have all these new types of engineering techniques/new materials in place in the Freedom Tower so that a repeat of the Twin Towers' collapse does not happen again. It's simple things like stronger support beams, fireproof materials, more escapes routes, etc.

You'd be surprised. The Air Force and NORAD here in the US are likely aware of everything that is flying, including low flying helicopters.

Yes, you can. You'd need a deep or semi-deep cover operative in the states and he would have to take the time to get a pilot's licence and then after that, buying a small private aircraft would be expensive but entirely possible. Depending on the size of the aircraft, you could take off from a fairly decent distance away or even from a field in the sticks or something and enter NYC airspace. As long as you flew casually and stayed away from restricted airspace you could probably get pretty close before they could scramble a bird to take you out. It's not like there's guys with Stingers standing on every rooftop in the whole city. dozingoff.gif

Once again, the Air Force is aware of anything flying near a major population center. It doesn't matter if it's low flying. If it's flying, they know about it. Talk to someone in the Air Force or someone who works in counterterrorism. This is not secret information.

technically they WERE aware in 2001.

they knew that planes had been hijacked and taken off course. they had them on radar.
they just didn't know what exactly the destination or intent was until too late.

It doesn't matter if it's low flying. If it's flying, they know about it.

If you fly low enough to the ground, you can avoid radar detection, but this requires quite a bit of skill and a damn good pilot.

The other problem is that if your intention is to hit a major metropolitan area, you'll crash into something pretty fast flying that low on the outskirts of the city, likely far away from your intended target. Notwithstanding the fact that you're going to be visible to many people and if you see an aircraft flying that low and there's not an airport near by, you'll probably be phoning 911.

Pardon my ignorance but what unit(s) is/are responsible for protecting New York City airspace? Closest defensive base I could google was in fact Stewart which is an ANG base.
