AMD is kinda pathetic in comparison

For gaming, sure. But the FX-series processors aren't really gaming processors- they're more like server ones with comparatively low per-core performance but very high multi-threading performance in bespoke applications (though not in much of the off-the-shelf stuff). They therefore tend to top equivalent Intel processors in heavily multi-threaded applications that don't utilise or favour Intel-specific instruction sets.

That is true, but we are all gamers here, and in the context of new consoles.

It'll be interesting to find out the next set of console hardware. I reckon the M$ will go with IBM/AMD again and Sony with Nvidia.

Hey, I'm looking into buying an external HD to store movies, TV shows and music on, I'm thinking of a TB one. I'm currently streaming media from PC downstairs to my xbox upstairs, which is a bit of a pain in the arse, so I'm after one that can connect to my xbox or my TV that has a USB port built in.

I'm looking to pay between £50 and £80.

WD has created the world's thinnest 2.5" hybrid HDD. Standard are at 9.5mm, then we currently have 7mm, but this one is at 5mm!

Saw this earlier today and couldn't help but laugh at how tiny it is. My sound card is bigger than that tounge.gif

Even the GTX 670's PCB is about that size, it's 10.5" long due to the fan that's attached to the end instead of directly on top of the GPU.

Isn't a GPU being small a good thing? I've seen people saying it's 'cute'.

I have eleven Cisco exams to do in the next ten weeks. I'm nervous to say the least.

EDIT
That 650 does look cute. It's good they put a nice cooler and case on there rather than just having an exposed PCB.

Well more surface area means more heat dissipation. A bigger GPU would be better for keeping heat at a minimum, but i suppose if you want a cute GPU to go with your My Little Pony posters that's fine.

What audience is this card actually targeting? Most people who buy 600 series cards will buy a 660 Ti/670/680. This seems like the 650 is targeting casual players, but why would casual players want to upgrade their graphics cards? Surely if you're only playing on PC casually you're already going to have a decent GPU capable of playing games smoothly and you won't need to buy a new one. It doesn't have SLI functionality either so you can't buy 2 or 3 of them and have them in SLI form playing games like BF3 in Ultra.

Well it depends on what the computer is needed to do and their budget. If I was asked to build a budget PC which can handle modern games, then I would look at the 650 and AMD similarly priced cards.

Assuming there is no impact to heat dissipation, I do not see why it's a bad thing. In the past 5 years GPU sizes have exploded, and it seems to be proportionate with performance. So it seems people are relating size with performance, and those that like to show off their hardware would be embarrassed with a smaller card even though it may perform well. Similar to a lot in the car scene, they don't want a tiny engine.

Mocking a card for being small is pretty stupid, if you ask me. Although I will say it looks a bit funny being so... stubby.

At least with a smaller card, you don't need a huge case to fit the card into. Some of the larger cards won't fit into some of the cases as they are just that bit smaller and end up getting caught on a drive bay.

The GTX650 is kind of a fail by the way. According to TPU, it's at best just as good as the old GTX550Ti. confused.gif
Judging from the specs it should be called GT640Ti, not GTX650... because it's essentialy an overclocked GT640 with GDDR5 memory.

Yeah, I don't see a reason at all picking this card over the 7770.

I just found that I've been running my Corsair XM3 DDR3 1600Mhz 7-8-7-20 RAM at 1333Mhz 9-9-9-24. Boy is my face red.

Yeah, it took me a while to found out about that as well. But I left it as it is, it was running at 1.65v already.

Looks like it was due to my mobo only being rated up to 1333Mhz. Not sure why when it was a simple adjustment in the BIOS. I would hardly call it overclocking. I literally changed a setting from Auto to X.M.P. I was able to keep Turbo Boost enabled as well by setting the CPU multiplier back to Auto. It seems immensely easier to OC this computer than my last though, as power settings have Auto options so it's as simple as upping the multiplier. And to avoid excess heat and energy usage I can just monitor the voltage Auto mode spits out and start from there as my peak and move down until I hit the lowest stable point. I might look into this... my Corsair H80 keeps my i5-760 under 45*C under full load on it's 2nd cooling setting, I could always bump it up 2 more if I need to, plus crank up the case fans up to high.
Fun stuff, haven't done this for a while.

I am sad to see that I put my money down on a sh*t socket. Looks like 1156 isn't going anywhere. The next upgrade will likely be almost an entire over-haul.

Your motherboard isn't really only rated up to 1333, it's just following the rules set by JEDEC (them people with white lab coats) that sets the standards to the speed of a specific type of memory.
I forgot what the updated standards is now, but it used to be DDR3 1333MHz is the standard, any speed over that, will consider to be a overclock.
