QUOTE
Rockstar founder Dan Houser has publicly talked about the next iteration in the GTA series for the first time.

However, the exec has told The Times that he hasn’t even thought of a City to set the game in yet – let alone a plot.

In a fantastic interview, Houser also talks to the paper’s Nigel Kendall about controversy over violent projects, the lack of recognition given to the industry, his reluctance to talk to the media – and the status of video games as ‘the new rock’n’roll'.

Talking about the release of Manhunt 2, Houser said that the controversial content of the game actually came back to bite Rockstar, as “when a game is banned it means we’re not doing our first job – of making the investors back their money".

However, his opinion of the ‘games cause violence’ argument was less charitable.

He added: “It feels at last like we’re moving on from that debate. The audience is getting past 30 so it all becomes a bit silly. That’s not to say that all games are for all people; we’ve never said that. GTA has always been rated 18 and we’ve always been very happy with that.

“Nevertheless, we do get frustrated when video games are singled out and movies are given a free pass. Manhunt 2 was banned in the same week that Saw was released. The arguments become quite ludicrous quite quickly when people argue that games are somehow more dangerous than full-motion video.

“Within Rockstar, sometimes we feel that some of our games get singled out and held up as pariahs. All we want to do is tell a story with rounded characters. Like Goodfellas, which is a key film for us, our rounded characters happen to be criminals.”

The paper reports that Houser will soon start work on GTA V, which will involve co-writing a script of around 1,000 pages – ten times as much as a feature film.

“We'll think of a city first, then the characters,” he added.

Did he really have to say it? I mean we're all looking for hints and he basically says "don't bother, even we don't know", that's a shame, I really like to find hints and all, but now we know none can be found it won't be the same.

all he really said was “We'll think of a city first, then the characters,” says Houser. The script he will end up co-writing will run to around 1,000 pages, nearly ten times as much as a feature film.

he didnt say we havnt thought of it he says this is what we do.

Perhaps even more intriguing is that he said this:

And, for all the trappings of the Manhattan lifestyle, England still has its appeal.
“Whether you live in London, New York or Tokyo,” says Houser, “the sheer venality of the life can get you down. After a while you start to think: 'I can’t take this any more. I want to go somewhere where people are miserable in a different way.'
“I don’t think in 11 years it had ever been 7 months since I was last here, so by the end of September/October I was incredibly keen to get to Europe.”

And also i thought this was pretty cool
sax player is based on his dad:

If Dad did plug in his console, he'd see a likeness of himself playing sax in the park in The Ballad of Gay Tony. It's his boys' way of saying thank you.

-Feel kinda bad now having shot him in the face every time i saw him. lol

I'm pretty sure they already started.
It's just that they don't want to share any info with us yet.

The times article is much better than the OP link.

I have to call BS on the fact that they don't know where they are going next. I'm sure that there is a whole team at work on it right now. Even Dan says so himself:

QUOTE
“I've read that about myself, but it’s a myth. I often speak to people like yourself. But me, Sam and Leslie [Benzies, another key force behind GTA] are very aware of the fact that we as a triumvirate do not make the games; 200, 300, 700 people make the games. It’s easy for people to focus on individuals because that’s an easier story to tell, but it’s not relevant to what we do...

“...I find it very depressing as a consumer when you read about one actor’s experience of making a movie. What about the writer, the producer, the cinematographer or the director?

“We’ve got, you know, 100 plus people, at least 80 per cent of whom are far more intelligent than me, and to start saying it’s me or Sam or the pair of us because we’re such crazy brothers just seems stupid. And it’s not fair or appropriate.”

Also, if GoodFellas inspired GTA, why not Casino?

He's lying.
It's the oldest trick in the book you know.
"Game? What game? There is no game!"
Heh, it's always the same. But I don't blame him, it's not ready to show just yet. But I'd be willing to bet that they've got the city planned out and could be at the stage where they are doing the pedestrian voices.

I don't know if you knew this before . Michael Pachter has reported months ago that Rockstar North is working on the next GTA over a year . His report was taken from a reliable source from Take Two . Read the following :

QUOTE
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter is working as a game journalist now, providing details on the next installment of GTA.

"Management declined to state when the game will launch, but has confirmed to us that the game is in development, has been for over a year, and is using the same game “engines” as the last version." Pachter said. "Management also told us that the team at Rockstar North is highly motivated to get the game out, and that the team understands that its highest payday will come from working on GTA instead of any other game."

Additionally, Pachter speculates on when gamers could get their hands on Grand Theft Auto V:

"When we do the simple math, we conclude that the next installment is likely to be completed by some time in 2010, although given the frequency of game delays, it is not clear that it will necessarily come before October 31, 2010."

Yes , logically , Rockstar was working on the next GTA for a long time , but they were working on developing the game's tech to present new gameplay elements and ideas . I don't have much knowledge about the processes and steps of developing a game , but as I know that the first step is developing the game's tech for months to present better gameplay , graphics , sounds ..etc , then , the developers come to story , characters , setting ..etc .

What this tells me is that the next GTA is gonna be like GTA2 in the way that they are using the same, albeit modified, engine, on the same consoles, but set in a new universe separate from the IV canon. Thusly, the next game will be GTA V, with no expansions, and the one after will be on a new console and called GTA VI.

I could have sworn I read a while back that Rockstar had started working on the next GTA either before IV was even finished, or after a month long break after IV came out? But then again I dont' see why Dan Houser would lie about it, he could have easily just said that they aren't ready to talk about GTA V yet.

For the neXt GTA game to be ready by 2010 they would've had to start on it right away after GTAIV was done.
So I'm thinking he's just saying this to keep it under a tight lid. They love to surprise us and they always do a hell of a job at it.
----------------------------
Has anyone seen that hoodie he's wearing before? They don't sell it at the Rockstar warehouse I checked.
I'm trying to make out the message around the design it might be a hint? So far I have:

Ferire- (to wound, to injure, to hurt)
Pulver (From Latin [color=orange]pulverem, accusative of pulvis (“‘dust, powder’”).

I'm missing the rest since I can't see the whole design.
I'm bored OK. bored.gif

EDIT: Meh... means sh*t

Either he is lying and the game is in development or he was just talking about how they about developing a GTA title.

Michael Patcher was just making a prediction when he said 2010 at the earliest and it was a pretty bad one in my opinion people look to much into the time between the release of III and VC when making predictions on when the next GTA will be released.

I find it very surprising that Houser 'hasn’t even thought of a City to set the game in yet – let alone a plot". I hope this isn't true! But co-writing a script of around 1, 000 pages? That sounds great to me.
