Ok, I have found out how to make GTA IV run with a reasonable framrate on older computers (about 3 years old)

Define a reasonable framerate.

It's really no secret that the game can be run on a P4. I've seen people here before who have done it before. I can't imagine how sh*tty the game play would be though. whatsthat.gif

What really annoys me are these idiots who think they can play GTA IV on their laptop with a Celeron, a gig of RAM, and some Intel Graphics Accelerator with 1024mb of VRAM. facedesk.gif

Me @ My pentium 4 with high textures. Framerate could be higher but this was a video proving that a Pentium 4 and High textures were possible at more than 5FPS. Also note Fraps + 720p (actually 786p resized)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUZ6qvkUU7w

High textures has nothing to do at all with the CPU and it's not small secret that having high textures only needs the VRam, not some very fast graphics card or CPU.

hmm, no, you're wrong, your CPU is directly effected by the size of the texture.

Texture quality is the last option you should lower when trying to run a game better. Ten years ago, graphics cards could run texture sizes of 1024x1024 on a 32MB card(If you want proof look at Unreal Tournamnent 1(1999) with the extra high resolution texture pack). S3 did a demo using huge textures on a 32MB card as well.

Ever since S3TC was introduce(now DXTC, DirectX Texture compression), texture size and detail for GPUs' were not much of issue as it was pretty much solved. It's all about shaders, HDR and lowering texture detail gives you small FPS gains because everything else is much more intensive.

Extortionate: What are your system specs because i've been reading this thread and i have a Dell Dimension 3000 (ehh i know, a few years old) with a Pentium IV @ 2.8ghz, and 1.5GB RAM, and a Nvidia GeForce 9400GT.

I already posted in the See if your game works POST HERE! topic and got really a "Doubt it or IDK try it" but looking at this thread gave me new hope

It depends at what FPS you can bare to play and at what detail you think is good enough for you. Now days graphics quality should come hand in hand with game-play. I myself cannot play games at low detail, I'm a visual person(which reflects being a graphic artist), so I like as much eye candy as possible at a playable frame-rate.

See specs in my sig below.

Well for crysis i set everything to Great Performance and then no AA (which is fine by me) but Texture and Water Detail i set to Good Visuals, if GTA IV is more demading i really wouldn't care if i had things set to Low/Medium, as long as its Playable ill be happy for the multiplayer experiance.

Does anyone know a way to play GTA IV on Pixel Shader 2 cards?

Please??....

I don't think that's possible man, if I recall correctly Pixel Shader also has to do with hardware on your card and if you don't have that chip... then it will not work.
You can buy decent cards for budget prices anyway now. inlove.gif

My mobo doesn't even have a PCI-Express slot.

Well then, you're f*cked. You need a new computer.

No, Pixel shader can be emulated on the CPU using 3d analyze.

You could probably play GTA IV well on those settings. I have a Dell Dimension 3000 with a Celeron @ 2.4GHz CPU, 1.5GB RAM and a GeForce 6200 video card and I get about 3FPS (it probably has to do with the Celeron CPU and the crapy video card). Now I have a new computer and it runs it just fine. (Dell Inspiron 537s) Yes, a $750 computer so I can play a $20 game...well worth it.

Anyone want to try this?
I tried it with my 9800GTX+, didnt notice any difference.
Also, the bat is useless. It just changes the window title and echos random.

A pentium d is about half as powerful as an equally clocked core2duo.

I am not sure if an nvidia gt200 exists. I think this refers to the gt200 series, so could be a gt220 or gt240.

So anyway, it will probably just about work on lowest settings, but will be a slideslow at times.
