I haven't written in a while, and the pieces I usually get into the most tend to stem from existing material like fan fiction. I remember setting a piece in TonyZimmzy's created GTA universe, and I got engrossed in that but, as usual, I never finished it!
Still, after reading LOTR/playing Skyrim I think I will write a short piece set within Skyrim, just a written description of a scenario I encountered while playing perhaps. Just something to exercise my creativity I suppose, as it has been a long time since I last wrote for a purpose other than analysis/comparing and contrasting for my exams... |
Wait wait wait... you wrote fan fiction of fan fiction?
Fanfic-ception! | Haha tell me about it! "A Green State of Affairs", not sure if you remember. Wrote about three chapters, lost my mojo and just left it!

Haha tell me about it! "A Green State of Affairs", not sure if you remember. Wrote about three chapters, lost my mojo and just left it! | I can't really sustain written works, so I stick to short pieces. My idea for a fan-fiction might work better as a comic book, but I can't draw for toffee, so maybe that's not the best idea. How did the English go mate? I'd rather gouge my eyes out than do English A-Level--just too much coursework, and being made to read books in which I have no interest doesn't appeal to me. It'd be cool if we could pick books to write about, but that would be impossible to implement as the examiners would probably kill themselves reading a plethora of obscure books which the kids chose to read .

Went pretty well overall mate. Got A's in my AS and A2 coursework, I resat my first year exam and did well (I get the resit results along with my A2 exams, so I don't have that mark back yet) and my A2 exam went well as well. I need B's across the board to get into my chosen uni so I think I've done well on the English front! As for the material, a couple of lessons into Year 12 I came out to my teachers and simply said "I don't like poems" and "I hate this book" (The Time Traveller's wife, a nasty piece of work); I was very arrogant, and at my parent's evening I got roasted because of it. I grew to accept the material I had to work with and I'm better off for it. Year 13 was much better as it was Orwell, and I've always been interested in him, and King Lear was a familiar text to me and found I could easily write about it for my coursework. I also read A Cat On A Hot Tin Roff by Tennessee Williams, which was decent as well.

Time Traveller's wife really doesn't sound like my cup of tea either, though I did enjoy 1984 and Animal Farm so I'd probably be in the same situation as you. I like maths and science now though, and find reading and writing to be hobbies now. That said, I'll have to do a bit of German literature (the Reader/der Vorleser) from September. I'm sure you've aced your exams aswell. Best of luck with university mate . What are you planning on studying? This post has been edited by elanman on Friday, Jul 6 2012, 20:23

| QUOTE (elanman @ Thursday, Jul 5 2012, 07:34) | | QUOTE (blitz @ Sunday, Jul 1 2012, 20:13) | After playing loads of Skyrim I actually got an idea, well, not really an idea, but a thought, if that makes sense.
I think, that creating a completely new universe would be f*cking sweet, if done right, of course. So, just for sh*ts and giggles I got out a notebook and started creating this list of things I'd like to see in this universe.
No matter what I do, as in, seriously, no matter what I do - anything I write ends up being way too similar to Skyrim. Seriously.
I think it'd be incredibly awesome to write something in the TES universe, but I want to create something different. Any tips on not subliminally copying off this already existent universe?
I mean, so far I've just been writing and reading what I wrote for like a gazillion times, if it's too similar to anything I've seen before I'll erase it and crack my skull for a few minutes trying to think up something different. Don't think that's right.
This is why I hate taking inspiration off things, although that's pretty essential.
Edit: Oh yeah, it also happened to me that I had this awesome f*cking story. It was seriously awesome, and I was really f*cking proud and I go to my brother and I tell him this idea, and he's like, isn't that Oblivion?
DAMN YOU BETHESDA. |
Well, if you've played as much Skyrim and Oblivion as I have, you'll unthinkingly draw inspiration from it. It's also worth noting that Tamriel, although original in many ways, is in essence a conventional fantasy world. The Elder Scrolls series is teeming with great ideas and originality, but you can draw a lot of parallels between it and other fantasy series. Have you read any volumes of A Song of Ice and Fire? There are some clear similarities between the two universes simply because that's the way fantasy is. You could try and avoid a fantasy setting, or really just try and look at the genre simply. By this I mean make the setting very simple, and let your plot, dialogue and characters do the rest so any cliché is avoided. Failing that, there's nothing wrong with setting something in a lesser-known region of Nirn. I mean, we know very little of Orsinium, the homeland of the Orcs, or of Atmora, or of Akavir. You could set a story in any one of these regions. | I just read this through (as well as Mokrie's) and decided to just write. I just grabbed a notebook and started writing ideas and sh*t. I did figure it would have a couple of similarities, and it does. At the end I made myself a plot and have started writing. Although I'm in like the first paragraph, I'm still excited about this. Perhaps I'll post it here when I'm done. Thanks guys.

| QUOTE (Tyler @ Thursday, Jul 12 2012, 06:41) | | Anyone here keep a journal, or just write little tidbits into a notebook daily? I struck the idea a long time ago, but recently I got into it. I must say it's refreshing to just jot down my thoughts on things that happen throughout the day, and as an added bonus I actually feel like I'm becoming a better writer through it. |
Well my writing ability's stagnated because all I really do now is mathematics (academics wise). I also feel that if I don't start sharpening my German again my command of the language will descend into that of a UK tourist with a guide book (OK maybe not to that level of ineptitude ). Writing in a notebook just random things sounds like a good idea for clearing your thoughts and suchlike. I was actually writing a Skyrim fan-fiction in my notebook some time back, and have got the plot pretty much sorted. The problem is that the plot boils down to a good versus evil story (complete with maiden locked in tower). With that said, it's got some personal touches which might make it readable. I've still got to write the whole thing in full, mind you, and the chances of that happening are slim. I've also said that it may work better as a comic book, and I can't shake that idea from my mind. Actually it would work best as an animated film in the vein of Heavy Metal or He Man and the Masters of the Universe, so maybe it wouldn't work at all in written form. I just write ideas and if I honestly believe those could be potential, original ideas for a story then I'll start developing the idea and try to make it more detailed.

| QUOTE (cammi @ Wednesday, Jul 18 2012, 17:10) | the reason I am giving up the AC Paradise was it didnt get much feedback. I know its my first piece of writing on here but I also thought it would be better in a set of DYOM Missions. But I made a start on a different project, Fallout : The Aftermath. I know its not my own work but I am terrible at making my own ideas. And you said it wasnt good. But I think Aftermath will attract more of an audience because it could be considered canon to one of the endings of Fallout New Vegas. And I have played all of the ACs but I wouldnt know where to start with them stories but enough to make an encyclopedia about fallout and I understood it .
Mokrie I will I message you what I wrote so far, its the first part of the prologue. Can you tell me what you think of it. Its just a small first draft. | Once again, why don't you try and create a story of your own. Think of some characters, think of a small plot. Write down themes, people's names, places, emotions, and a good story will stem from those.

| QUOTE (El Zilcho @ Wednesday, Jul 18 2012, 20:00) | I have zero commitment. HYPERION has somewhat tapered off and Hollow is still floating around, but I can't keep at either. It's this horrific loss of interest which plagues all creative work I do. I want to write, about anything, but I'm stuck on the excellent topic of Hypocrisy in One Shots and for some reason cannot approach. I'd love to just post topic after topic of one piece, thematic or idealistic gems but I think that would have a diluting effect.
And it's summer so I'm concerned that once I start college I'll have no time for embracing my creativity like I do now. | I may jump in ahead of you with the ones shots theme! The way I see it is 'just write' @cammi, I'm not convinced you'll follow through, that's what worries me. I like fan fics and I like fallout, if you want to write a fan fic do so but look at me and my 2 (in sig) - I've had problems with people not reading it and leaving feedback and a few months ago said so in this very topic (go back half a dozen pages), but A this is a slow part of the forum, and B very few people will see that as a cause to complain. People voted for my stories which means SOMEONE likes it. You have to have some pride and faith in your work. Regarding paradise, I offered some constructive criticism and opinion. The problem with it was it wasnt grabbing me. My advice to you will be to write your fallout story, plan it out and build your characters up, and take your time. The first chapter of justice in flames was uploaded months after it was written. Sometimes you have to e patient, read some stories and edit your work etc I'll read your story in pm if I get s chance but you'd be better off postin it in a topic for others to offer tips - some may have better guidelines for you. But only upload it when you feel it's ready.

Mokrie, I started to read City Of Lies. I have read up to chapter 4 and it is the best story I have ever read. Did you think that The Prologue Of Aftermath was better than Paradise, I will stick with Aftermath because I am playing Fallout New Vegas for the 2nd time and I have started Aftermath based on what I want my 2nd ending of fallout new vegas to be. The first time I played New Vegas I used the autodoc to kill Caesar but I stayed with the legion. I killed a lot of NCR, I Killed the Boomers, Omerta, Mr House, Chairmen and more. I killed pretty much everyone except Yes Man, Victor and the people of goodspring ( I like them for some reason )And I killed Lanius and just told the rest of the NCR to f*ck off in the ending. Im hoping for a more exciting ending this time.

I hate when I'm at that point where I have ideas in my head for scripts, short stories, and essays, but I have no real desire to write. Instead, I rather just brainstorm for them.
Brainstorming is not bad -- and most likely will yield a better product -- it just isn't writing. And I'm slightly back, at least until the fall semester of law school begins in the middle of august. Hopefully I shall have a few pieces of writing posted, and I might edit some old things and post them.
