Yo!

I just downloaded and installed the free and legal GTA2 on my vista laptop without problem. When I start the game and see the main menu, however, I can't click on anything! I can go up and down with the arrows and quit by pressing ESC, but that's all... it's impossible to select play, options or exit.

I have absolutely no clue what to do or what's causing this. I hate that.

I hope you guys can pass me some sweet knowledge on this! Thanks!

Select menu item you need and press ENTER key on your keyboard.

There is no mouse support in GTA2. All done by keyboard.

Haha, sorry for the confusion. I'm not THAT stupid.

Of course I already tried ENTER and about every key on my keyboard... just nothing works!

Edit: changed controls in GTA manager, doesn't help either.

This is strange.
Enter should work by default.

Try to run GTA2 in compatibility mode for XP or 2000.

Maybe this helps?
If not, reinstall GTA2.


But i think that bug lies in Vista. Can you try any other PC with XP for example? If yes, do it.


Maybe laptop Enter key doesn't work correctly? Try any other app with enter key. This may be stupid suggestion, but it doesn't hurt.

Tried it already. Didn't help.

Also tried to run it as an administrator. Didn't help.

I've played GTA2 before on a vista pc, and had no problems back then.

And my ENTER is as healthy as an ENTER can be... the strange thing is I can use ENTER to skip the intro movie etc but when I'm in the main menu it doesn't do anything anymore. I can still use the arrows and ESC, and the music is playing, so the game didn't freeze or something. Weird.

2 things i recommend you to try.
1) If you already haven't then reinstall it.
2) Make a Alt+Tab out of game when in menu and then switch back to game.


Try Enter again.


This is strange bug, i even don't know what to think.

Tried both. Didn't work.

The GTA2 menu just writes registry keys, so it could be replaced easily enough. I could make a simple launcher if you need it.

There are two enter keys on normal keyboards but they send different scancodes and the one to the right of the numeric keypad won't work with GTA2. I think your enter key is sending the wrong scancode and might need to be remapped.

You could try using KeyTweak to remap the scancode.

28 = Normal enter key
57372 = Numeric keypad enter key

I don't think that's the problem either... in KeyTweak my ENTER-key is applied to ENTER, but it still doesn't work properly. And when I change the controls in GTA Manager, the new 'ENTER-button' doesn't work either, so I don't think anything needs to be remapped.

Sigh.

What did you say about a simple launcher you could create?

The control settings don't effect the menu, they just change the ingame keys. What language is Windows set to?

It was indeed the ENTER-key which wasn't working. I had to change the ENTER-function into SHIFT to enter/exit cars and stuff... but I can live with that because this game is just pure awesomeness.

So your enter key just doesn't work in GTA2 but works in notepad? Is there anything else it doesn't work in?

Did you try GTA2 Launcher?

Dammit, I'm having exactly same problem!

@Wojtek, I can't work out from this thread how you fixed it... Please can you - or anyone else! - let me know? I tried downloading the launcher mentioned, but (Win7) tells me "MSCOMCTL.OCX" is missing.

I used to play GTA 1 constantly but never got GTA2, and it's so frustrating to be so close to playing it, and yet so far

Any help would be hugely appreciated

I uploaded a newer version of GTA2 Launcher. It doesn't require that OCX file anymore.

Although, having reset ENTER to SHIFT to enter cars, I can't press ESC, ENTER to quit the game (using ALT+F4, so no save) but perhaps I can work something out around that.
