one thing that totally fixed the game freeze / lockup to sound loop and hard reset was putting -availablevidmem 2.0 in the gta shortcut, but after patch 2 such command stopped working and freezes came back, i'll try nomemrestrict now, but i'm sick and tired of this sh*t icon13.gif

Well, the two times I've used -nomemrestrict I haven't had crashes... I'll report back if I do get a crash with it ever.

As far as changing the frequency of the sound through my audio control panel (I also have realtek) I couldn't find that option.

So far the three fixes I've seen that seem to add stability are:

nomemrestrict

turning clip capture off

increasing the number of pre-rendered frames through cpu before sending to gpu

I don't know about ati cards, but on nvidia cards you can do it through the nvidia control panel. Go to "Manage 3D settings" then "Program Settings", then select LaunchGTAIV.exe and change the pre-rendered frames from 3 to 5 or 6. This will put more stress on your CPU though I think so maybe you need a good cpu for this fix confused.gif

Chances are you can implement that fix via the command line method but I wouldn't know the exact command...

using ati 9.1 uninstaled previous drivers before installing these, already reinstaled the game, patch 1 and -availablevidmem 2.0 will NEVER cause the game to freeze, patch 2 pfft just forget it, the game looks prettier, but it's unplayable for many

WOOT!

R* sent me this email a couple of days ago! (hadn't checked)

QUOTE

Hello,

Navigate to: C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\

Find the LaunchGTAIV.exe file, right click and select "Send to" --> "Desktop (Create shortcut). Next view the desktop, right click on the newly created shortcut and choose properties. Find the box called Target which should read as the following :

"C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe"

Please change this to read as

"C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto IV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" -notimefix

Save the changes made by clicking okay. Then run the game again using this new shortcut.

Kind Regards,
2K Games Technical Support

Gonna try the fix tomorrow as I'm gonna go sleep now.

You're kidding me...

OMG R* suck donkey balls! How the hell do they get off suggesting a fix that they know has NOTHING to do with the problem I'm having? Motherf*ckers! The fix they suggested is actually to do with slow/fast gameplay, not freezing... >.<

Yeah, I'm still getting freezes/crashes now. Seems to either freeze or crash after about 2 hours of gameplay. It's been pretty consistent. Sometimes I get an error message with a crash, other times it just freezes and I'll have to head to the task manager.

I've tried the nomemrestrict fix as well as a few others and nothing seems to make a difference. I haven't tried lowering the graphics settings in the game or lowering resolution, but who would want to?

I hope Rockstar is working on fixing this game and not just trying to sweep these issues under the rug.

The only thing I can think of is that if everyone having this problem reports it to R* Support they may be more likely to fix it in the next patch if such a thing ever comes... Though another part of me thinks that there isn't much point contacting them at all given the shoddy response they gave me...

Here's the link anyway: http://www.rockstargames.com/support

If you do contact them it might be a good idea to mention all the fixes you've tried so that they don't try to blow you off with the same BS...
