Anyone know of a definite mission order? There are some missions that just don't make sense if you do them in the wrong order. One example is the first mission with the Marshal. If you didn't do the McFarlane Ranch mission that gives you the lasso, you cannot tie up the criminal and you must kill him - but it's obvious you are supposed to tie him up. There are others, but I can't think of any at the moment.

I was just wondering since after playing GTA IV while viewing "The Possible Trinity" topic, that the GTA IV missions alone have a certain order.

I just don't know how to go about it with Red Dead Redemption. How would John Marston deal with it? When a new mission branch appears, would he finish the missions for the one he is currently doing then do that one - or do the first mission from the new branch, and finish the previous branch. There are just so many options, and there has to be a correct order to play the missions.

Another example is that you can finish doing some missions for Seth before doing Irish's missions, and John will complain about the gun not working even though he didn't even do that mission yet - or something like that. I can't remember, but there are other instances where there is a certain mission order that would be the best to play.

Yes, it's very good especially if you like zombies, and even if you don't you will still like it (i did) plus it's long and will last you lots of fun hours (considering it's a cheap DLC)

It's not nearly as good as the original, but it's cheap nowadays and contains plenty of new challenges.

I don't think there is a definite order, they made it free for a reason, and on the marshal mission you only have to shoot the dude on the foot, not tie him up.

Oh alright. It's been a while since I played it. I got rid of my 360 so now I'm getting it on my PS3 and replaying it.

There is a definite order.

In one mission Bonnie said that The Marshall had told her of "John's plans" Yet when i did the mission, i had not spoken to the marshall, so he'd not know who john is....

Its a tiny thing that bugs me; if i see such an inconsistancy i have to reload my game and play the missions the right way round...

Maybe she was lying because she has a crush on John? You know, trying to find out if he is going to stay with her?

Or perhaps - and more realistically - she's making fun of him. Either way it's an inconsistancy if the player has not met the marshall yet...

Bonnie's cool but i can't get over how she's recycled from RDRev but then a few characters were

Have you played Left 4 Dead series? They are really good zombie games. It doesn't really have a story like Undead Nightmare, you just played through different levels.

I'm sure they will recycle characters into the next Red Dead. I think it's a cool way of showing the evolution of the series, in terms of writing and graphics.

But dude, Bonnie is awesome. And I felt so damn sorry for her when John left. Those first few missions with her family and the Marshall were the best, felt really homely and such. If only he just stayed with her.

bonnie is cool dont get me wrong. A woman in a man's world. I really liked the rappor she had with John and i wish they had the story carry on past TLETSBD so Jack could meet her - that would be interesting (Jack's "story" is severely underdone imo.)

It would be very interesting.

I remember reading a fanfic about Jack getting sent to the Macfarlane jail. Bonnie meets him and finds out he is John's son. The story goes on about him repaying his debts to her for the crime (he tried to steal some cows or something) he attempted, and from the looks of things, it was heading in a erotica between Jack and Bonnie. I never read anymore; I think it was stopped.

Jack Marston himself gets too much hate. I thought he had great potential for a badass law-hating gunslinger, with the backstory he got given. I enjoy playing as him because he was more of an avatar to whatever you believed he could be like, but at the expense of any real story for him of course.

I agree. I find it difficult to play as a bad guy as John. Everything about him and the story just doesnt support it. it feels wrong when John robs people etc.

Jack's annoying with his comments, but he can be funny at times when insulting people "Ever got your ass kicked by a teenager?"

I feel a story for jack which supports playing as a true outlaw was overlooked.

Its cool for example, when getting dry gulched (ambushed) and taking out the guys, to tie the woman up and take her to the middle of cougar territory, and letting fate deal with her. Or pushing someone and starting a fight then drawing your gun and hiding, watching as the law kill the man for you. Also cool to shoot the gun out of said man's hand, though this gets you a bounty!

a few missions offer john the chance to do the bad thing (i know you for example) but, with IKY, where john can convince a man to return to his wife, or to cheat on her, it just feels wrong when you take the bad route. Same with "let no man put asunder" or whatever it's called, when tasked to get the man's wife back, i don't think John would. It's an illusion of freedom i think, you're supposed to help people, to be a good guy. It's not like Fallout where being a bad guy is very benificial and fun.

Jack kind of rectifies that, but with no story, and the minor nagging (excuse the pun, its terrible) it seems hollow.
I did start a RDR fanfic though it never went anywhere. It features Jack (as a secondary character) after john and abilagil's death he's alone and loses faith in humanity, and becomes a baddass outlaw. The story had two endings - i never decided on which - one: Jack is eventually arrested and serves 32 years in prison for his crimes, releasing into a new world in 1947 where he moves to LA (was going to be continued with an LA Noire fanfic, but LA Noire wasnt the game i thought itd be and i wrote no fanfic for it).
Jack struck me as a very angry man, whos only morality was tied with his love for his mother. I think he'd resent his father for the way things turned out, ultimately realising it wasnt his fault and forgiving him and becoming devastated that he's gone.

The second ending had him seeking his own redemption, and becoming a marshall, based in a growing Armadillo, and often travelling to the other towns and keeping the law with a harsh hand.

Would have been cool i feel but, as said, never got finished. Not enough interest i dont think

I would've like to have seen a RDR fanfic from you. You seem to have a talent for that sort of thing wink.gif

For many players, it would was very hard and upsetting to see John's fate. Well just imagine how upsetting it was for Jack? I understand why most players hate Jack. He's the "replacement" for John Marston, one of the most likable protagonists ever. Thing is, Jack isn't anymore happy about having to be the new Marston man than you are. And I really like how Rockstar can create protagonists who reflect where the players mind is. Niko was fresh to the world of IV, as were you. Johnny and Luis were regulars to LC, as were you.

Infrequently during shootouts with the law, Jack would say things like "This one's for you Pa" "I HATE the law" "The law killed my father"
It really incites you to go on rampages and play on the wild side. I enjoy hearing that sort of passionate dialogue. I wish Niko would spew more rage when he went on killing sprees in free roam like he does in missions.

Oh and all this Red Dead talk got me to play some again. Here's a little tale of an adventure I had:

I left Beecher's Hope at morning time, and rode his Hungarian Half-Bred past the Pacific Union Camp. I crossed the river and traversed the outskirts of Mcfarlane's Ranch, finding myself climbing up the north hills of Pike's Basin, right next to the railway that goes into the tunnel and arrives at Armadillo. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and all I could think about was how GTAV would look. Then, out of f*cking nowhere, I got reminded what I was playing again; Resident Cougar 2. My horse got it's ass mauled by a random cougar. I grabbed my Pump Action and blasted about five of those bitches back to the Hell they came from as I made my way further up into the tree-filled hill. The last cougar I shot survived my wrath and met my mercy, limping away from its brush with humanity. I guess it sent a message back to it's pack that they should they just give up.

Now you must remember I was playing on Hardcore (plus I choose to not have HUD). In Hardcore, you can't whistle for another ride until you get a new horse yourself. I ended up reaching the cliffs on Hennigan's Stead, overlooking the entirety of Armadillo's New Austin. I made camp and rested for the afternoon. I woke in the night and got up. I decided I would head down to Armadillo, just when I heard the soundtrack change to "tense-scenario-mode". I instantly looked behind into the forest. A man got off from his horse and started feeling up a dead man on the ground. I drew my Cattleman Revolver and slowly approached him. Then I switched to Fists and sprinted up to him and pushed him to the ground. I kicked the sh*t out of him until he got knocked out. I made haste and took his horse and rode off into the night.

<snip>

Epic story. I've only come up against two cougars myself. They seem to hunt in very loose pairs. Where there's one, there will be another, and usually no more for a few minutes.

Hardcore mode - I don't have that, having the release version of the game - hardcore modes in the GOTY version or somethign isnt it?

I am also playing with free aim and no hud. It makes the game really hard especially during in-transit shootouts.

Cougars arent really that much of a threat if you know the game world. You won't find any between McF's ranch and Armadillo, right up to Benadict Pass (where you're unlikely to but might).

Traversing Rio Bravo, any of the northern areas, or the creek you'll probably see them, but if you have your horse gallop at a decent pace, you've got only about 20% chance of getting pounced. Their only a danger to slow moving people and people who are not vigilant. Even when you're ready for them, they still make you go "sh*t!"

Back to jack: The way i see it is R* either gave up or jack as a P-C was an after thought - or he's there ONLY to enable post story free roam.
I feel the story should have been longer - or a DLC released (I can not fathom how Rockstar overlooked this) - either way, John's story occupies the first half, or two thirds of the story, with Jacks taking over, allowing some character development.

In RDR John is the bad guy-turned good, whereas Jack, in my eyes, and to use a quote from batman, 'wants to watch the world burn'

I think there's an irony; John's actions in The Last Enemy', were done to protect his family, and he did not want Jack to end up like him. The irony was that, in doing what he did in The Last Enemy, he paved the way for Jack's fate as a gunslinger. I also see it as - A, he's angry and wants people to suffer like he does; B, he misses his dad and wants, like many young men, to be like him. Perhaps, as he's older, he finds it cool, but he becomes an outlaw because he feels close to John; C, he's alone in the world, left with a legacy that's not going anywhere (the ranch) and being the last in a dying age.

I've heard a couple of stories and read a couple of fanfic of RDR. One had Jack move to chicago and become a writer, where he penned an epic novel chronicaling his father's exploits. Another did well to show jack as a loner, and all i remember of it was him (for somereason) living in the shack in the creek, where "flowers for a lady" takes place, watching the world - the fanfic did wonders to give insight into Jack's mental state.

I think he has to act tough too to hide his pain. We've all been upset - about a death, or a loss, hell even about a football result, or something someone's said - and we've all had that urge to smash something. I've had bad days where i've loaded up Prototype and laid waste to everything - that game's good for buring off anger.

I find RDR's great for relaxing, just going for a ride. I never liked westerns before RDR, and i bought it because it looked good and it was "grand theft horse"
It's the only game i KEEP going back to - i havn't played GTA IV since March 2011 (though writing Justice in flames, despite the lack of interest, has made me want to play it again.). Somehow RDR keeps pulling me in. I used to load Vice City up when summer hits - i call summer "Vice City weather" as it makes me want to play it. Now the warm weather makes me want to play RDR.

Also what you said about Niko - i interpreted his character to be more of an operator - a mercenary who knows his craft and knows it well. That professional (that i've tried to showcase in City of Lies and Justice in Flames) that will move unseen through the crowds, track his target and, when in combat, put a single bullet into the head.
Marston isn't an 'operator', though the concept of a Wild West meets Hitman meets Assassins creed has always apealed to me, so in my mind him (and jack) work well shouting things out. Niko isn't the kind of peron imo that will shout badass things out - he'll just do his task.

Also i am in the process of writing a Western. It's not a fanfic, it's original, and i'm trying to take a different twist on it. So far what i've got is good, though it's the hardest thing i've ever written. its taken a month to write anything past the introduction. If/when i upload any of that, i'll try to remember to PM you (otherwise feel free to keep an eye on the writers discussion for it)

P.S. the WD is very quiet atm, we need more writers and you seem like a sensical person - pop by (though im pretty sure i've seen you in there before)
