I have had the stutter issue for a week now, and all I have to say, is that it is totally random.

One day, it stutters like made, every 3-4 minutes, for about 20 seconds.

Next day, GTA4 plays absolutely fine, with no stuttering at all for like 4 hours.

Another day, it plays fine for 5 hours, then stutters for 20 seconds once.

Its something very weird, and I dont think it has anything to do with the graphics card, memory or anything like that. I think its the game which is causing this

Have you tried -nomemlimit in your commandline.txt, that removed stutters for me. Try also the -novblank, for some reason my game loads miles faster with this in the commandline too. mercie_blink.gif

I truly belive that it's something to do with starting of the game. Since I downloaded a modification what skips the loading screens at the start, my memory leaks seems to be gone. I even can't belive it for myself.

I generally get >40FPS (C2D 3.16GHz, 9800GT 1GB), but sometimes the game randomly begins to stutter at a godawful 8-15FPS for a while (usually happens outside). Eventualy, it suddenly reverts back to 30-40FPS. The change is not smooth - it's very sudden. I guess that's why it's called stuttering...

I played the game stutter-free for the first week.

Now it stutters all the time at random. Everything will be going smooth and then the screen freezes for a split second and stutters for several frames then goes back to being smooth. Sometimes it will literally freeze for multiple seconds and then start going again. The game has only completely crashed once for me, though.

Also, I didn't change anything: graphics settings, drivers, and commands are all the same as they were. I also defrag my hard drive every day before playing.

in game settings: 1680x1050/High/Highest/45/75/75/0

Intel Dual-core Xeon @ 3.6ghz
2Gb DDR2
Geforce GTX 280
Driver 180.70
Windows XP SP3

18-30fps

I have the exact same problem as the last poster, on a new XP 32-bit, which I specifically installed to play GTAIV without lags.

The game runs FINE - smooth, crisp, etc. But about every 15 seconds it stutters for a split second (like if you have an integrated audio card, are listening to music, and switching to a full-screen DOS application).

Can someone help me with this? It really ruins the experience.

My stutters seem diferent... game starts ok, after some time playing stuttering starts, usually when driving... VVVRRR...RR....RRMMMM....MMMM.
I exit the game and my PC is still going nuts, hard drive is thrashing and my CPU going from 14 to 40% use... so i might have to reboot to get my system back confused.gif .

I dont know if its what people claim to be a memory leak, feels more like f*cked up console programming sneaky2.gif .
Why? Because the game runs great in MP. If you ask me it sounds like a problem with how the game spawns and dumps all the stuff that goes around the player?
I bet many people are afraid to go online because the game runs bad in SP but online is definetly smoother, i can play for hours and hours.

SPECS: P5B-E, E6600, 4 G DDR2 800MHZ (corsair XMS2), 8800 GTX 768, Audigy 2ZS, 250 GIG seagate SATA II, Vista SP1.
Fresh install, all drivers up to date including mobo, chipset, blah.

This system was going to die like this but i think im going to quad it, only because of this one game inlove.gif , will se how things go after the first 'real' patch ph34r.gif .

This is one of the more interestin posts on the matter.

Once I loaded up the game and start point in the 1st flat, I was getting 28 FPS, normally it is between 55-75 FPS in the room.
Note the fluctuation, as this was whilst still observing for 5 mins.

When I went outside the flat with the low FPS as above, it was raining, suggesting Z-occlusion amongst many other things is proper f*cked.
The wild variances in framerate whilst nothing complex is happening suggests there is a long way to go before even considering any optimisation has taken place.

on a different note just quickly what voltage do you have your e8400 at to get 4 ghz?

not sure if my batch is one of the ones that can break the 3.8 barrier and i don't want to push the voltage to far.

Question, in the commandline.txt (Main IV directory right?), do I list the codes as

-nomemlimit, -etc, -etc.

or

-nomemlimit
-etc
-etc

Well 4.0 proved to be unstable, so I put it down to 3.8 @ 1.376v.
I also have a C0 from the high-voltage-temp batch. My friend's got an E0, running 5 degrees colder at same settings and about 1.2v.

Ontopic:
I will try to remove the overclock totally and see if that does anything to the stuttering. Maybe video ram doesn't catch up with the processor?..

Also, I want to restate that the XP SP3 i'm playing GTAIV on is COMPLETELY fresh, about 2 days old, and has absolutely nothing installed on it except the sh*t games for windows requires me to play GTAIV. It's even installed on a partition I called GTAIV.
