Hey there. I've been trying for days to get MP working with gta4 for pc, and as it stands I'm completely out of ideas as to how to get it going. Let me explain my issue.

When I attempt to join any game, regardless of wether the games in progress or in lobby, regardless of quickmatching or custom match, regardless of how many people are currently in the game and regardless of labled ping, I don't appear to join it. Instead one of two things happen:

1. I am dropped into a new, empty game lobby by myself, as if i told gta4 to create a game instead of join one. I seem to be able to stay there for as long as I wish. On only one occassion did a few people join the game, and I was able to play. This is the only time I have been able to play multiplayer and it was rediculously fun. Stable frame rates and ping, not a single problem. I stopped only because I had to go and all other attempts to create a game have seemingly failed as no one joins. This is the common result of my attempt to join a game.

2. I see water, and a backround of sky. My character appears to have just fallen into the water, as I see a big splash. this picture doesnt move as far as I can tell. It stays there for about 2 seconds and then I am then dumped back into gta4 singleplayer, even if I attempted to join from the custom game screen. I've seen this result from attempting to join both games in progress and games still in lobby, so I have no idea what it might mean. It is less common than the first result.

A little about my system:

VISTA
Intel Q6600 Quad Core @ 2.4ghz
Geforce 9800GTX 512mb with 180.84 beta drivers
OCZ 800mhz dd2 Ram 2gb
Gigabite EP45 DS3L Mobo
D-Link WDA 1320 Wireless adapter
All items are set at factory defaults.

I run GTA4 without any command line edits, at the settings pre-set when I first loaded the game: 1620x1050 with medium texture, high render and moderate slider effects. The game runs (more or less) without any problems in singleplayer.

My wireless router is a Linksys WRT54G. It is 1 room away and transmits without incident for every other application I use it with (and by application i mean games ) I have checked and rechecked its settings makeing sure all ports are open and forwarded, and that upnp is enabled. GFW Live shows upnp as active and in use, and that my Nat is open. I have even turned off the firewall, but to no effect.

So thats it. If you read this far I thank you for your time, and maybe someone will have some super idea to get me going. Thinking monocles on!

I have the same problem with joining games. A few times i have been able to join games while they are still in lobby but never a game that is already in progress. I also get into an empty server a lot too when i try and join a game. Multiplayer was one of the big reasons i bought this on pc after having it for 360 and i wish they would fix it.

Bump, i would like to keep this topic alive bcz this is one of my biggest problems and concerns. I just want to play multiplayer and can't, it seems its something that could be fixed without a patch. This and missing and flickering textures after about 30 mins are still my 2 biggest issues, if both of those issues were fixed i would be a reasonbly happy camper. Once again my specs are Athlon x2 6400, 8800 GT 512MB ddr3, 2 gigs ddr2, Vista 32, and retail copy of game.

trading pms with support. they want me to record it with fraps, but the unregistered fraps only records 30 seconds while my average load time is 45-50. on top of that the raw video is over 100mbs so it cant be sent via email. trying to find an easy way to compress them, but if anyone happens to have a registered version of fraps and a compressing program shoot support your vids!

but ultimately theres not much to see. in most cases 40 seconds of a loading screen and then an empty lobby or a shot of water. speaking which heres a photo of the water crash i mentioned. this time instead of a splash, its me , and in this other one, nothing.

You can use xvid codec and virtualdubmob to join files, resize and compress your fraps video's.

Xvid you can get from HERE

and you can Virtualdubmod from HERE (download the "All Inclusive Pack")

Both freeware and easy enough to use for what your after only issue is I dont know if vdubmod runs under Vista.

Hi i am new here, i registered as soon as i read this topic. I have the same problem here. When i join a random server, 90% - 95% (avarage) of the times i just end up in a empty lobby with only my name. Like i am creating a new match. This really is very anoying. I really watched out for the multiplayer option that GTA IV gave.

Have you all checked your NAT type in the GFWL menu? If your NAT type is "STRICT" you will be unable to join most multiplayer matches.

Dhavoc, have you tried to join a match with the "Join in Progress" method from the GFWL menu?

I looked up in GFWL menu. I found that NAT is open.

On some forums I looked, I saw that maybe a wireless network can be the problem.

I hope that that isn't the problem.

Like I posted in the other thread what worked for me:

-open these ports:
TCP 80 - 80
TCP 53 - 53
UDP 53 - 53
TCP 1096 - 1096
UDP 1096 - 1096
UDP 88 - 88
TCP 3074 - 3074
UDP 3074 - 3074
TCP 2074 - 2074
UDP 2074 - 2074
(if at the end it still doesnt work also try these:
UDP 6672 - 6672
UDP 28900 - 28900
TCP 8001 - 8001
TCP 27900 - 27900)
-enable Upnp in router and firewall.
-grant acces to GTA IV and RGSC in your firewall.
-turn your router off (really pull out the cable for half a minute) and turn it back on.
This should do the trick.

I got the same problem.

Whenever I try to join any game, I just end up in an empty lobby.
I have all the ports open.
uPnp is active.
Firewall is off.
NAT is open.

The funny thing is, before the patch 1.0.3.0 it worked sometimes.

Now I understand why R* never included Multiplayer in GTA before... because they obviously have no idea how to do that.
(even GTAMP for GTA:SA works better than this...)

Did you add gfwl's exes to exception list on firewalls? What antivirus software are you using? I had simillar problems with my gta 4 on win7.

Sometimes i have exsactly same problem as u guys
Sometimes i get message ''unable to conect because kicked'' and i was not kicked, i just couldnt conect to friends game first time, second time i try, i get this message.
