When troubleshooting you need to remove as many variables as possible. Lower you settings all the way to low. Put your resolution at something like 1280x1024 and play for a half hour. Then come back here and post if it still happens. If it doesn't then slowly one by one raise the settings a little bit, starting with the textures until it looks good and doesn't lag.

I think most of the problems with this sort of issue is that too many people are trying to max out the settings with inadequate hardware. An Nvidia 9600GT and 2.4Ghz Core2Duo will not even get a good result on medium settings. Sorry but this game needs a lot of CPU power and memory bandwidth both on the video and system sides.

My system is in my sig. I am playing with these settings.

Texture: High
Render Quality: Highest
Draw Distance: 20
Detail Distance: 100
Vehicle Density: 33
Shadow Density: 9

With that I'm getting a solid 35-45 FPS.

My game's not getting laggy - it crashes! Everytime.
I can do whatever I want, like lowering all the settings to min or even raise 'em to max - it doesn't make any difference. (But in FPS wink.gif )

Just after about 30 minutes of playing (I got a 5-10 FPS boost after patching colgate.gif ) - "GTAIV.exe doesn't work anymore". (Or similar, I have a german Vista)
And that's a "new feature" of the patch... cry.gif Before the patch it never crashed ingame! (If I passed the license screen...)

My specs:

Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3GHz
Corsair XMS2 DHX CM2X2048-6400C4DHX (2x 2048 MB DDR2-800)
Gigabyte EP35-DS4 Mainboard
ASUS HD4850
Vista Home Premium SP1 x86

When your game starts lagging after a few minutes, go to windows task manager (without quitting the game i.e. press ctrl-alt-del) and click the Processes tab, then find GTAIV.exe on the list, right click it and set priority to realtime. Should solve it smile.gif

just tested the mothed, lots of thanks to you but for me,it not works like a charm, this problem is just killing me,really dontgetit.gif

Realtime Priority doesnt help...
It just makes the computer put GTA IV first...

It should put GTA IV in the garbage bin on the dekstop... Then we all say it was Microsoft that made us do it... biggrin.gif...

Ive tried this, but it made my game go REALLLLYYYY SLOOOOOWWW........
Super crappy idea for me... sad.gif...

Yes; just as an fyi, this solved the problem for me:
http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=382884

It seems like those with 2GB of memory (or less) who were suffering from hard drive swapping are the ones who are seeing the biggest improvement here.
