NOTE: I OWN A LEGITIMATE COPY OF GTA IV Please do not delete my post. I have emailed Rockstar support regarding this also.

I have been getting the "ZLIB20 fatal error" with GTA IV. On the GTA IV error code list it says to re-install the game so I have done that twice but with the same error returning each time. I also occasionally get CTD's with no error code.

Sometimes, after playing the game for a couple of hours, the frame rate starts to get choppy, especially when it rains. The frame rate returns to normal even when it is raining if the game is restarted.

Some things I would like to point out are; the system is not overheating, the system is stable under Prime 95 torture test for over 17 hours (Both memory & CPU have been tested thoroughly), power supply is adequate 750watt.

Graphics settings are:

Video mode: 2560 x 1600

Texture: Medium
Render Quality: Highest

View distance: 50
Detail distance: 60
Vehicle density: 40
Shadows: 0

Video memory: 711 / 961

My system is as follows:

CPU: Intel Q9550 @ 2.83ghz stock
VIDEO: GTX 280 with 180.84
Motherboard: ASUS P5E x38
Soundcard: X-Fi XtremeMusic

All drivers in the system are current.

I have done the following as recommended on the forum and various websites:

Update DirectX to latest version from MS website
Installed NET Framework 3.5 SP1

Has anyone had some luck solving this issue?

I was getting this error, too.
But now I just restart my game everytime after 1 hour of gameplay and that seems to do the trick.

If you Google the error apparently it's been mentioned in a lot of articles, funny though it says "Unknown fix yet" or something.

Hi vice, unfortunately I don't find restarting the game every hour to be a satisfactory fix for this issue. I hope Rockstar has this covered in the patch.

Hi! I am also getting ZLIB20 Errors! It does happen sometimes but my biggest concern is game-crashes with no error message! All i hear is an "error sound" and then the game crashes to the desktop! This is so freakin annoying its driving me nuts' and makes don't want to play. XP SP3 and Microsoft net. framework 3.5 installed.

... Anyone have the same?

PapiLoTTi, do you have an Asus motherboard? I see that NIPSEN does. Could possibly be an issue common to Asus mobos? All three of us are running XP. I'm gonna try Vista 64 when I get home to see if it happens on there too. I'll let you guys know.

PS - Yes Papi, I sometimes get no error code when crashing also.

Check the event log.

I have had the game CTD without an error but the event log picked it up like it should. In my case, the crash was because I needed to give my CPU more voltage.

No kidding? How did you determine that you needed more CPU voltage? What was in the event log?

I should have explained further. I had just upped my CPU multi so I was expecting something nasty to happen. I would not rule out cpu/memory errors with the others in this thread though.

It means that your steam copy or game discs data are corrupted.

Only solution is reinstall the game from another source, you can try download it again from steam, howerer if its a game discs then you are pretty much f*cked. Check out this tread: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=380910

I've got the ZLIB20 fatal error, also crashing without error (probably related) on

BFG 8800gtx stock speed 180.84
q6600 stock speed
evga 680i SLI mobo
6gigs ram
raptor harddrive
X-Fi Fatal1ty sound card
Vista x64 clean install NOTHING but gta is running on it.

I'm pretty sure that the error has nothing to do with how the computer is setup but something to do with the game.

I find that defraging the harddrive helps alot with loading time and limiting errors but they still happen.

I've had many of the common errors most people are having, also crashing to the desktop, blue screen of death, complete system freezing resulting in having to reboot.

I've even tried the cracking the game with the launch button to disable the securom DRM. But that didn't improve things. Note my game is a legit copy aswell.

If from what it sounds like that my disk is f*cked, would it work if i downloaded whole damn game from other sources and use my serial, would that work???

Well, it seems after switching back to Vista 64 bit, the ZLIB20 error has disappeared. I just played for a couple of hours and no CTDs at all. Is anyone with Vista 64bit having the ZLIB20 Fatal Error?

EDIT: Hmm, I guess so

Sounds like game data is getting corrupted after GTA IV CTD's. That's f*cked up

That's definitely a corrupt file of some sort.
You should reinstall...

I've gotten this error even with the crack.
So that's not really the solution, either...
