I've just purchased GTA4 recently via the Steam Client so it's effectively a Digital Download of the game, so there is no problems with installing the game. It is however a Games For Windows Live issue.

None of the above I even attempted, however here is the solution that has worked for me.

Ok for me, GTA 4 is installed in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\grand theft auto iv\GTAIV" as this is where the GTA4 exe is.

In the folder there is a file called "GTAIV.exe.cfg", Open it with Notepad.

The line that says "<enableCrossPlatformSystemLink>true</enableCrossPlatformSystemLink>", change true to "false".

Game should now launch.

If you have the retail dvd, it should be something like this

I make sure these following steps absolutely help you guys play the game without this error!!

1 - Install GTA IV + Rockstar Game Social Club as usual

2 - (Optional) Crack + Patch as usual

3 - (Important!!) Uninstall Games for Windows LIVE (in Control Panel) to remove xlive.dll in System32

4- (Essential!!) Download Microsft NET Framework 3.5 on Microsoft.com

I got the message while trying to start up the game.
I bought the game in a store (retail).
My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium.

Have you tried reinstalling GFWL, just browse this thread for a while.

Putting this here in case anyone is still having the problem with Windows Live Installations.

Be sure when you install the wllogin_32.msi (I think that's the live ID assistant) your background intelligent transfer service, your software licensing service, and your windows update services are all started, you can turn them off after you have a successful install.

You may notice the Windows Live service in your services now if you were missing it before.


Putting this string in here for searches, since it's the msg I was getting after reinstalling live after the WS10 "windows live ID sign-in assistant setup wizard ended prematurely" and it ran properly when i turned those services on.

Update: Great... even though I could reinstall GFWL without the "prematurely" message anymore, Im getting the WS10 error again. Not going to buy Max Payne because of this, this is happening to alot of people

You can completely bypass GFWL with xliveless.

when strarting up the game at start screen there is a black box then a white fatal error ws10 box pops up
i went to add/remove programs and deleted the "games for windows live" icon but i dont know how or where to go to reinstall it
my system is window 7 and the game is bought at retail
please help!!! im not particularly computer savy

You should avoid using such large yellow font, it's matter of common courtesy. Your question is just as readable when you don't make the text stand out.

This is a fan forum so you should retain your outrage. Try using xliveless to see if you can at least start the game.
