I'm sorry what? I know I didn't read what I read because it just seemed like you said that GTA was better on PC than on console.
And FPS on console is fine, not as smooth of course, but when nobodies is as smooth it doesn't make a difference, Halo 3 on the Xbox360 is great fun, so is COD4 I presume. |
You can't blame someone for having an opinion. GTA doesn't necessarily have a better suited platform as such, it's just down to personal preference really. With GTA, it has its pros and cons in both versions (PC and console). For example, PC versions of GTA can be altered more with mods that the console would never be able to acheive, not only this but PC versions of GTA are also more graphically advanced and generally look a lot better. On the other hand, the console versions might be considered 'better' because it makes use of a controller, which (IMO) is a lot easier to use (that said, some people prefer using a keyboard and mouse - again, down to personal preference). Even then, you're still open to use a joypad or the 360 controller for Windows or whatever. But I'd say first-person shooters are more enjoyable on PC, for me at least. You get much more precision with a mouse than a joystick. Although after having owned CoD4 on 360 for some time I can say they're just as enjoyable on a console. But yeah, for me, it's all about PC gaming baby.

I couldn't even consider myself using a controller over mouse+keyboard, only the time to move your crosshair from one side of the screen to other should be enough to explain this. Not going to go any deeper on that issue, since it just brings up pointless flaming.
There's plenty of PC games I'm expecting. Starcraft 2 comes to mind first, especially after seeing what a huge flop Age of Conan is. I mean there's people with better rig than I have who are getting around 10 FPS in-game. I have tried Crysis, and my rig gives way over 70 FPS in that one. Funcom just needs to learn how to optimize their freaking game engine and not to release a game that isn't even half finished on the market.
I've been waiting for a sequal to Knights of the Old Republic series for quite a while now. I'm just really hoping it won't be an MMORPG, because it seems that genre is always getting shouldered out by the behemoth of the market, WoW.
Oh, and someone mentioned preferring CS:S over Crysis, I'd go as far to say that I prefer Quake 1 with decent addons over them both. I guess it's pretty obvious from my avatar, though!

| QUOTE (matthew1g @ Jun 16 2008, 23:27) | | well I have a high end gaming system myself ( see xfire), I can play all games on their highest except crysis which is broken anyway. I hate having to update every few months, I mean, look at my 88GT sure it can handle everything on it's highest at the moment, but some months after the release of this card, 9 series was out. ati had their 3870x2 and are now releasing their 4XXX cards, while nvidia have just released their GT280/260 cards. I mean seriously. It's too expensive. I prefer a console for this reason. | So far in my gaming career, I've only had to update around once every 3 years. Even without updating your stuff (this is assuming you don't go for the cheapest stuff when building), you can play latest games in well enough performance. I got my rig in december last year, and I don't plan to update it in a long time. Consoles do not allow this kind of updating. If there's even a good enough console to run a game, you will have to buy it. You can't update your old to run anything. Now that MGS4 is out, you can see what the most powerful console out at the moment can put out. It sure looks cool, if you've already spent way more on a television than you would spend in several years on a computer. You could get the same kind of performance out of a low-priced computer at the moment. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion.

| QUOTE (CharmingCharlie @ Jun 16 2008, 18:40) | Ronnyboy I can assure you if people had to upgrade their pc's every "4 months" NO ONE would be playing games on the PC. I usually get 4 - 5 years out of the PC's I build. I built a core2duo with 8600gt about a year ago, it still plays all games on max settings @ 1280 x 720.
I have since built myself a second gaming PC which plays games at 1680 x 1050 with all settings on max, it has done so for the past 6 months and I imagine it will continue to play games with max settings at that resolution for some years to come.
I expect both my PC's to outlast the 360 in terms of usefulness and probably the PS3 in terms of usefulness. Then when the time comes again for me to upgrade I will take all the money I save by buying the CHEAPER PC games and build myself a new kick ass PC that beats the crap out of the "next next gen" consoles and it will last me 4 - 5 years. | Well, I was just choosing a random date. Sure many PC's can last that long, but many people don't have the money for a nice PC like that. Also, many people feel that consoles are more safe in security. No viruses, no illegal downloading, no of that. But to each their own.

Ah, almost 24 hours and the first troll yet has to be seen. SmellyJelly, I personally don't like the zombies but those vids you posted look very nice. I am waiting for Mafia II (but of course) as it should be grand and I am hoping to see the English version of Space Rangers Reload sometime this fall. If not, I'm taking Russian lessons . No, seriously. Also, maybe there is going to be a remake of Mount&Blade, it seems the Turkish team has signed a contract with some publisher and they are probably working on that as we speak. I hope they will not commercialize it, though and keep it open ended but with a bit more content. | QUOTE (Dillyracer @ Jun 16 2008, 16:25) | Thanks a lot for the invite mkey !
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, I'm glad I don't have to go to the GTA IV section again. |
You earned it, pal . This is meant for PC gamers and those that respect PC gaming. There is a lot of BS going on about PC as a gaming platform at the moment, but IMHO it will live enough to see console gaming (the way MS and Sony handle it) die. I only wish we had some sort of logistic support, because that PC GA is a sad joke. | QUOTE (Deuce Deuce @ Jun 16 2008, 15:27) | | After trying the demo the other day I was pretty shocked to see that I could run it on medium, since my PC is still decent-ish but about 3 years old. To be honest I think GTA IV will be more demanding given that it's a pretty huge game and data has to be loaded constantly. |
I don't think so. My guess is that even the fastest single core CPU will be able to run GTA IV. Will it be playable? Probably not, but it will look something like it looks on consoles. You know, 20FPS average and 1024x768 resolution is not that hard to achieve. Remember SA and what you had to do to make it look like it did on consoles? Turn down the resolution to 640x480(and this is still better then that-gen PS but out!), forget about any AA, set the LOD to low. Hell, even my old PC with Celeron at 2.6GZ and ATI9200 Stupid Edition (yes, laugh it up ) could run that on 1024x768 and still get a playable framerate (depending on tastes). When we talk about optimization, IMHO Half-Life 2 sets the standard while Crysis is not optimized properly. Hell, it's not optimized at all, but the same could be said about previous GTAs. GTA3 was horrible in that aspect. VC was so so, while SA definitely could do better. Let's hope this time around we'll see a major overhaul on GTA IV with some proper texturing and decent framerate. If they don't plan to make it properly (because IMHO technically the console (PS3 version is the one I played) version sucks) they should skip it altogether. There are more then enough great titles coming for PC anyway. IMHO an even more important issue are the controls. How will R* handle them? The controls in GTA have never been that gamepad oriented like in GTA IV and this concerns me. There is lame aim and cover system, can you remember any games that had those? Godfather, anyone? What do we know about it? Yes, it had really crappy controls on PC. For example, you couldn't strafe left and right. The WS combination was for forward backward movement while AD controlled the x axis. Let's hope R* will do this one properly. If not, see above. PC gaming is IMHO not that expensive. The hardware price is going down. For the price of my current PC now I can get a proper gaming rig, while back then I got a mediocre PC. It's all about getting the bestbuy components and skipping most expensive ones which give you a 10% increase in performance for 50 to 100% higher price. PCs are reliable, you can repair minor faults without breaking a sweat and you have the option to upgrade. Games are less expensive and your PC can handle much more then gaming. Security can be an issue, but I will bet you anything that if you stay clear of the odd warez and porn sites you can do without any AV software. I know I can. When you handled that, the only "issue" that remains are the mail attachments which will be taken on the server side of the mail service provider. So the ones complaining about security are the ones that use internet explorer and visit sites to download and install various crap they shouldn't .

When people talk about having to upgrade PCs constantly, it's nowhere near as bad as anyone claims, like people have already said, so long as you aren't bothered about always using the highest graphics levels a PC will last between 3 and 6 years at least; also, Crysis came out, it's not optomized, it's the only game I know of that pushes my machine, and that's because it isn't optomized; I can still play it on high (it's surprisingly smooth even at 20-30fps). I honestly don't think another game will come out that pushes a machine the same way Crysis does for a looong long time, and so what if one does, turn down the settings and play anyway, a priveledge that only PC games have. People say that consoels are better because everyone has the same hardware; that is true, but it's a very very bad thing if that particular hardware setup can't handle the game properly, it detracts from the experience for everyone, and there's nothing we can do about it.
Banter aside, I have a high end PC and a 360, so either way I have the best of both worlds, I just prefer PC gaming.

Everybody does have the same hardware, but it's messed up as manufacturers need to develop a cost effective unit. They need to cut out the "redundant" functionality thusly making consoles even more gaming oriented. This is weird as it seems they would like to turn consoles into some sort of PC. Now the consoles have a HDD, can connect to the internet, one is even supposed to browse the web through a console. Hell, this time around, consoles are even physically getting similar to PCs. Of course they are not upgradeable, in fact the only thing you can replace is the external PSU. | QUOTE (kingvercetti @ Jun 17 2008, 16:59) | | Banter aside, I have a high end PC and a 360, so either way I have the best of both worlds, I just prefer PC gaming. |
So, we have a x360 fanboy amidst our ranks, eh ?
