Is Carl Johnson dead? Because in GTA IV, I saw some graffiti on a wall saying:

"Victor - never forget you / always remember you bro", "RIP Claude", "RIP Toni", "remember Tommy - u r still my hero", "Carl I love you RIP everyone miss you", "RIP Vic".

Did he get the electric chair for killing that cop or something?

The GTA IV easter eggs topic states that it's only a reference to earlier GTA protagonists. It doesn't talk anything about R.I.P. Surely, if there was any such thing, it'd have been mentioned in the easter eggs topic.s

Actually it does say R.I.P. on the wall...

And also things as "We'll never forget you" and "You're still my hero".

But the messages are all written incoherently, so it hard to make out to which of the protagonists these statements refer, since all the major GTA protagonists' names are on the wall.

Tommy, CJ, Toni, Victor and Claude.

I think R* stated that all of the past GTA characters are dead, which is why none returned to IV. R* killed Tommy, CJ, Toni, Vic and Claude so they won't have to be asked on the next GTA, "Will Tommy or CJ make a cameo?", they can answer simply, "No. They're dead."

Pretty much what he clearly said. It was already made official thousands of years ago that all the past protagonists will be dead. In fact, the likely occurence of them being dead is very high. It's because they live the life of a criminal so they can be shot down the next day.

My idea is, they're not dead as of 2008 in the GTA III canon, but in the GTA IV canon they never existed.

Lets make it this way. They all existed in GTA III universe. We all know that Vic is dead and was probably killed in 1985. Rumours were that Tommy is rehabbed. Claude would always get into trouble so he is most probably dead. Tony became fat, so he sits in his restaraunt and doesn't leave it. Carl is a gang banger, so I feel that he is either dead or gone hiding.

In GTA IV universe, they're either different people or never existed.
