I've used the Hellenbach GT from the "Car Salesman" mission, because it's the only car I think it has decent speed on the lands of Portland... Sure I smacked it a lot and ended up spewing black smoke, but I got the Thunder Rodd at the end of the day non-fireproof, huh?
But anyway, I guess a Patriot could work...

I was very lucky to find Deimos SP and took it from Portland and won the race. GTA WIKI was right, fast cars such as Deimos SP and Banshees or other speedy cars, but not all spawn. I still have this car in my possesion. f*ck Mr. Whoopee, Deimos SP from Portland rules.

Actually, that is not the closest vehicle to you when you start the mission, as there is a Mafia Sentinal spawn in the same parking lot as the mission start initiate point is. lol

But, it is super easy to win the race on the first try using either a Mafia Sentinal OR a Police car, as the AI drivers do not know how to drive well, and so that allows you to get past them fairly early-if there is still one in the lead, then a simple PIT maneuver will fix that-then it is just drive sensible and not hit everything in site...

I used a Perennial the last time I did it. I wanted a challenge and I got it.

IMO the best car to use in the races is the heavy black Banshee you can get from the mission 'The trouble with the Triads'. It is quite fast and it can manhandle the other drivers.
The best bike would be the PCJ-600 from the '9mm mayhem' side mission. It got very sharp handling and it is heavy so you won't easily knock yourself off of it.
It should be noted that heavy vehicles will take more damage than normal ones so you'll have to drive more carefully if you choose one of them.
