Move somewhere else. It seems like someone in your situation has the means to do so.

My car will be 27 come October. It's awesome. So long as it doesn't break on me (hasn't really yet. knock on wood), it costs me barely anthing to drive. It's even permanently registered. It makes me really not want a newer car.

I would love to live in the States but work and money is in Asia. My girlfriends from Southern California but she hates it there and she wants to live in London but I hate it here and I want to live in LA. lol anyway..if/when we get married, green card! Then I shall come and see you Lurch and we'll go play with cars (and i can learn a thing or two) biggrin.gif

How have you kept your car working fine for 27 years? The '97 S600 I got as a hand-me-down from my dad is barely drivable. Electrics have gone, seals are failing.. cars just falling apart really.

@Blackout?
The VW Beetle was the very first car my family owned and its still one of my dads favs, he grew up with it

I'm going because of a ridiculous bet

Haha, nice one.

I dont know if there is a ferry from Stavanger. I think you can get one from Kristiansand to Hirtsals. If you dont mind the 1000km through Denmark, and Germany to Holland.

I'd gladly take denmark-germany then holland, Norway's roads are worse than cold dinner. I have taken the ferry from Stavanger to Denmark. It's possible tounge.gif All I'm wondering is ferry ticket, tolls and so on. (I haven't even won the bet yet, but the other guy stands a crocodile's chance in a bike race)

That happens when you live in snow/salt central.

Weather here, on the other hand, is awesome and very classic-friendly.

Just passed my theory test. 50/50 for the multiple choice questions and 62/75 in the hazard perception which I'm happy with. The questions were meant to have changed as of the 23rd January but they were the exact same as on my practice CD.

So if you've seen me raving about "the dragon", it's more or less the most badass road in the entire southeast, possibly even the country.
user posted image
But until today, I'd never actually hit it. That changed today. I road the tail of the dragon all the way to the state line at deal's gap. The tail of the dragon actually goes all the way to Robinsville, NC but, as you can see, the majority of the really technical twisty sections are more on the TN side. And good god, what a drive. I literally drove the E28 flat out. At the ragged edge. Tires squeeling, breaks burning, tail out on several occasions nearly losing it. Car does not understeer, even without throttle, it will still slightly step the tail out. Tons of super tight turns. Lots of them with no guardrails and dropoffs that were multliple hundreds of feet. If you've ever heard that you're truly living the most when you're closest to death. Well that's what applies to this. Truly exhillarating.

I did one run up then back down to the damn lookout and parked the car. Then got in my friend's Turboed E30 325is with a ton of work done to it. Guy estimates he has 15k in the car. Holy f*ck does this thing go. Grips like glue then slams you into the seat like a sledgehammer. We ran with a Miata on coilovers and sticky track tires and and a 350z with some work done. The miata handled like a race car. Even with a more or less stockish engine, it was crazy. All 3 of these guys run the whole gap flat out. It's crazy. And their flat out is a lot faster than the old E28's flat out. Also in the group I ran with were a couple of 370's, another 350, a few pretty mean modded S2000's, an RX8, a new 5.0 Mustang, an 03 Mach 1, a pretty decent S15 (I think?) 240, a Golf GTI, and a newer Mini Cooper.

Onto some pics.

I remember an old picture from another car forum of that road. Bunch of guys with Mini's, Bugs, and Civic's were taking it on. Looks to be a fun old time if you have the right vehicle. Without? I imagine it must be hell on wheels.

More or less you really just need good suspension and good tires, (neither of which I have). Power's not too important. You obviously need a manual trans as well since it's more or less a pick a gear and stick with it routine. I was experimenting with 2nd and 3rd a bit. 2nd was better compression braking so it was easier on my brakes and I could push it through the turns faster but it also was way too easy to get the tail out then. After that I started diving into the turns in 3rd knowing I wouldn't have the right RPM to power out and that I'd have to downshift as soon as I got out of the turn just because it wasn't as easy to get the tail out in that gear.

How does one participate in something like this? Looking at your photos it must be some sort of event, no?

Just a little group event organized on facebook. Nothing too special. It was happening during the yearly S2000 weekend so there was quite a bit of traffic and quite a bit of S2000's up there.

Wow, what a complete jackass. Rule #1 there is you don't cross the double yellow. They have pulloff spots for slower traffic and they'll usually let the faster cars by. Funny that the guy wasn't even driving hard and still smashed it into the wall. sh*tty driver.

Really? that seems like too small of a speed disparity to warrant a ticket. I mean adding +2" wheels without recalibrating your speedo could get you close to that. Depending on how much it is, it might be worth fighting. $50 or less, it probably is more expensive to fight.

If it makes you feel better, I got pulled over because my windows were "so tinted out that [the cop] couldn't see in my car". I explained to the officer as politely as I could that he was a jackass and the windows were stock. Following this was a request for his badge number and an official complaint.
