Telling the difference between V1 and V2

V1
Version One, or V1 was the first version of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas released. It was released on October 19th, 2004 (North America). This version has the controversial "hot coffee" . For those who dont know "hot coffee" is when you get one of the 5 girlfriend to drink hot coffee, and that leeds to a sex scene at the girlfriends house. Version One is also 100% modiable.

There are a few easy ways to tell if you have V1
1. Look on your DVD, If it only says GTA SA and nothing else you have V1.
2. When you start the game and go to the main menu, if you have V1 it will just show the 3 options(start game, options, exit game)
3. If you can experience sex scenes with the girlfriends and CJ then you have V1

V2

Version Two or V2, is the second version of Grand Theft Auto released it was released on June 9th, 2005 (North America). After the controversey with V1, Rockstar decided to release V2, which had the "hot coffee" disabled. Later, someone reversed the coding and relesed a patch which enabled the Hot coffee" With the release of V2 the modding ability was taken away. If player chose to download the GTA SA downgrader patch they are able to install mods once again.

There are a few easy ways to tell if you have V2
1. Look on your DVD, if it says GTA SA along with Version two below it, you have V2
2. When you start the game and go to the main menu, if it says Version V2 down in the bottem right hand corner you have V2
3. And if CJ can't have sex with the girlfriends, it is V2

Well hope this helps all the people who don't know what version they have. smile.gif

Nice little thingy for noobs, but I think this should go in the Gameplay section.

About those clean cars, you can PM a v2 player to ask if they have clean cars on their game.

Easiest way to know this is to check out the size of your "script.img" file in <SA folder>\data\script directory. If it's 562 Kb,It's version2,if 568 kb then,version1 [Assuming you haven't replaced it with hot coffee files or something]

I wonder if you would help to add a few notes about the difference in barriers for v1 and v2. This remains a sticking point for people switching scripts to complete some missions. For instance, if a v1 player with v2 scripts complete Green Sabre for a v2 player, they will still have the barriers in place after the mission. For anyone unfamiliar with this difference, people with v1 can't see or control v2 barriers, and the other way around. It's a difference in the executable version, not the scripts.

BTW, is this much of a concern for mission helpers? I have the information required to make modified v2 scripts that will allow v1 players to control v2 objects they can't see.

Yes, V2 has that feature-BUT, it ONLY works if you have the FX Quality at Medium or High(Will not work on Low).

But, basically, it works similar to the car washes in IV-except done through the Pay N Spray in SA, where you go to the Pay N Spray and it will repaint and remove the dirt from the car...

To add, there is also a V3, it is the Steam/D2D/Amazon Downloads/Gamestop Downloads(the Legal download versions), but I have not been able to find whether or not those saves are compatible with V2 or not?

PS-I know this is an old topic, but since the question has not been answered yet, I thought I would go ahead and answer it since I have V2 of the game...AND since this was linked to This Pinned topic, it would be an OK bump, since it is OK to bump an old topic that has not been answered and has substantial info. to add.?

I have 562KB but on my DVD case. It doesn't say anything about v2. What version do i have?

P.S If i have v2, can someone help me downgrade, i have been trying and trying. GTA works fine, but as soon as i install SannyBuilder and CLEO3, it doesn't work. Can someone help me. smile.gif

EDIT: Or will i have to ask this question in the 'GTA SA: Modding' section?

If the Box and disc both don't say Edition 2 You most likely have a Version 1.
If the menu screen doesn't have a version number in the lower corner you most likely have a First Edition (V1). Downgrading discussion is not allowed on this forum, your on your own to check GOOGLE/BING.

First Edition (V1) games don't mention the version because there was the thought that it is the Original.
The readme may say but it has been said the the V2 readme wasn't upgraded so some still say V1.0.

OS shouldn't. Now be aware you are asking questions related to MODDING. As the Banner Says:
Modding questions belong in THE MODDING FORUMS! Where You click on the underlined words. icon14.gif that’s where You can find Players who ARE dedicated Modders, they can really give You some help! smile.gif if you post in the correct forum topic, as they can get persnickety about that.

To add to/edit my previous post above about the Clean Cars effect and save compatibilty with V3, It seems like the Clean cars effect is a V2 exclusive, as I use Medium Visual FX on my V2 game, and the Clean car ability is there, however, on my Steam version(V3), I use High Visual FX and the Clean car effects do not work.

As I have pointed out in another topic, V3 and V2 saves are totally compatible, as my V2 saves load and play great on the V3(Steam version) of the game. smile.gif

No-not 100%-it is similar to V2, only with V3 it CANNOT be downgraded. Pretty much only script mods-NO .img editing.

Although I have a downgraded version... that counts.. right?

No. 'Downgraded' games are still V2 (second edition) Downgrading only removed the programming that would prevent modding.
V2 games are still V2 games.

Just curious, What is the difference between V1 and V2 games-besides the modding ability? Is there really that big of a difference between the two versions? Cause I know V2 and V3 are pretty much exactly the same-just one is a DVD version and the other is a legal download version....So, what's the big deal and what all was changed between V1 and V2? confused.gif Also, What is the big problem with save compatibility between V1 and V2 saves? confused.gif

There is almost no difference between the v1 and v2 saves on PC. There are 3 primary differences:

1) Difference versions of the executable program will record a version ID at the beginning of the save. Version 2 exe files will refuse to load saves with a version 1 ID. Version 1 doesn't check the version IDs. This is seldom a problem anymore since SnP started converting all version IDs to v2.

2) When they recompiled the scripts for version 2 they changed the total size of the "main" thread of the game. As I understand it, this changes the memory offsets for all the other active threads that are recorded after main. All that really needs to be done to convert saves between v1 and v2 is to change the offset pointers by adding or subtracting the difference in the sizes of the main threads. A more thorough converter will also tweak the variable that records the size of main.

3) The flags that control the barriers and a few other groups of objects are different for v1 and v2. This is because the streaming IPL files are encoded in a different sequence in GTA3.IMG - a really huge archive with most of the game data. These object groups are; the barriers between LS and SF, the barriers to LV, Truth's Crops, much of the pre-Yay Ka-Boom Boom crack factory, and the floor behind the broken wall at Smoke's Crack Palace in East LS.

There are two tools that can convert all of these differences for PC saves:
hmvartak's Save Game Converter for Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
GTA SA Savegame Editor v3.1.2 by Paul Breeuwsma

There are more differences between v1 and v2 saves for PS2, although both PS2 versions use the same flags for barriers and objects.

PS2 V2 has several more global variables, most of which were added right at the beginning so all globals are offset by 4 (I think) until somewhere around 2500 when another global was added so the rest are offset by 5 (IIRC). Global variables record and control a lot of what the script does so this information is critical for people trying to convert some cheat device codes to other versions.

PS2 V2 no longer has the unused Pay'n'Spray in LV (east of the carpark that is north of the pyramid) - not that it matters since other versions can't use it because the door is on backwards or something so it doesn't work. However, since the garage is removed information on the properties, size, and location (but not the contents) of all subsequent garages is stored in a slightly different location.

I'm curious to know what version I have.

- No mention of a version number on case or disc
- Copyright information on case states 2005-2007
- I live in the UK so it's the European edition
- From eBay Amazon
- The "End of the Line" save found here works

The version number will be on the lower right of the menu screen.
If your game has no version number on the box or disc it would be a First Edtion.
BUT, if there's a copyrights notice dated after 2006 it should be a Second Edition. Or maybe a counterfeit.
