yes mta for gta 3 has been out for years. Also if you have vice city you can download gta liberty city

Yes MTA theft auto is a wicked download for GTA3 which allows you to play against other people online, type in Multi Theft Auto into google and also download All Seeing Eye so you can view the servers to play on. Theres also GTAVC:MTA, becareful though i have had someone try to send me a virus on MTA and also some people on there hack people for fun if you annoy by using hacks yourself, so be warned apart from that its great fun

I've found that text in the GTA3 text file too, on a clean install, I think it might mean there was suppose to be a 2 player option kinda like in SA. I think had way more in mind when making GTA3, but left much of it out.

MTA online is fun but a warning, I installed it like 6 months ago and found a virus on it now.
Since its not official its got loads of bugs in it and ways for people to send you virus's without you knowing it.
