my daily driver is also one of my favorite cars of all time; an 02' Pontiac Firebird Formula. lightly modified (intake, exhaust, long tube headers) it puts down about 402 bHP at the rear wheels. |
I know it's an LS1 and all, but you're not making 400 whp with nothing but bolt ons. Please post up your dyno sheets if you disagree. An LS6 has different heads, cam, intake, and exhaust parts just to make 405 hp at the crank. This post has been edited by Lurch on Sunday, Aug 5 2012, 04:35

| QUOTE (El_Diablo @ Sunday, Aug 5 2012, 00:53) | I only listed the most significant base components. "intake" and "exhaust" doesn't begin to cover the details... I didn't think anyone would care.
if you must know it's also got a custom H-pipe, Turbo mufflers, SLP cold-air, Z06 MAF, an LS6 manifold. 3400 stall and shift kit but that's kind of irrelevant. |
I could believe a solid 37X, maybe even 38X at the crank seeing as it is a an LS1 and all. But 405 at the wheels is a bit doubtful. I'd also guess that the auto is probably sapping about 10 more hp to the wheels than one with a T56. Not with a stock cam. Cam swaps can go pretty far with them though. A decently built LQ4 with a th350 in an S13 at an event I was at was making 342 whp and when it was all said and done, it was probably fairly close to a mildly built LS, possibly slightly more powerful. what don't you like about it? I've always been in love with the GM F-body. these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_F_platformthe Trans Am / Camaro is one of the first cars that I ever thought was "cool." my dad had been taking me to car shows since the day I could walk and for some reason I just fell in love with Trans Ams. my love for cars has branched out to many other types since then, but there's something about the Trans Am I hold dear. it's still a rare and unique car to see on the road. you see Camaros and Mustangs all the time. and now Chargers and Challengers and GTOs are common again. but there's really not very man Trans Ams rolling around to this day. people still compliment me on the Bird pretty often. it helps that it sounds great and I keep it clean, but yeah. something about it will always be special to me. here's another angle of my Formula in the rain. you really don't think it looks good? | QUOTE (Lurch @ Saturday, Aug 4 2012, 23:51) | | I could believe a solid 37X, maybe even 38X at the crank seeing as it is a an LS1 and all. well I said "about 402," not 405 but that's not the point. if I told you that I meant to say it was only about 400 at the fly instead of at the wheels, does that help? if you insist then I guess I can dig out my dyno prints and scan it again and post it for you. it was done a few years ago and it's probably closer to 390 than 400. which means you're right... ...but can you really blame a guy for being proud of his ride? perhaps proud enough to recall his actual numbers with a little bit of extra optimism?

I've just not been a big fan of cars from the 90s, though of course there are exceptions as my daily driver is a '97 Infiniti. I've just always thought that cars from that era were a bit soulless in terms of aesthetics. I'm not like Lurch or Sivis as I have barely any idea about the internal workings of a car so I'm unable to be appreciative in that sense. I judge cars solely on their looks, comfort and power. If you've seen my collection you'll probably think they're all super boring and a waste of money but at the same time those are the cars that I like. So, although I don't like your car, I can understand why you would like it. If that makes any sense at all. Your car does look better in that picture than the ones you first posted though, I can give you that.

If you're at 387, than a cam would most likely put you in the low-mid 400 range. Stock cam is almost always the limiting point for GM V8's. I'd think with heads, a cam, and a remap of some sort, you could easily see 450ish or more.
Hell, I've seen LS7's (with 505 hp stock) putting down 650 with nothing other than a cam swap, remap, ported and polished stock heads, and the usual exhaust mods. A new cam can go a long way on an LSX.
