Awesome job, Patrick. I only recently upgraded to FF 3.5 and not having the extension was starting to make me restless. tounge.gif

Thanks.

You guys are gonna be pissed but you could've used the old version of the extension with newer versions of FF. Al you had to do is edit a line in a text file. The only reason the old extension didn't work with newer versions of FF was because of this:<em:maxVersion>0.10</em:maxVersion>. Here's how you fix it. I did it(along time ago tounge.gif ) and it works. I only noticed this thread a week ago when I saw it in the most recent post area on the forum index.

Why should people be pissed? The updated version of the extension was available on the same day as the official release of FF3.5.
Plus the new version has some additional functionality that the old version didn't have yet.

Nevermind. I just skimmed the thread. I though the extension wasn't being updated regularly. Forget me. blush.gif But that's still a good trick. Although I would hope newer extensions don't even have that issue anymore.

There is no need to edit files yourself. You probably didn't install the latest version of the extension as this version is compatible with the latest Firefox version already.

Editing extensions yourself as described on the website that girishb linked isn't without risk.
In general it's better to check whether the original author has posted an update.

Patrick, just something I wanted to ask. I checked the install.rdf in the extension and it enlists the max version as '3.5.*'. So, I'm assuming that the extension will work with all FF versions till 3.5.9. But what about the 3.6 Alpha 1 version? Will it work with the alpha version of FF too?

The version number listed in the install.rdf isn't a reliable indicator for version compatibility. Just change it to 10.0 or something else higher and you won't have to worry about if for a while. The worst that can happen is that the extension is actually incompatible and won't work so there's no reason to be afraid to try it. That max version setting is what FF uses instead of an actual compatibility check to determine if an extension is compatible with a newer version. When FF is updated it checks install.rdf for all installed extensions and if "max version" is lower than the version updated to, FF looks for an update for the extension. If there is none, then its is disabled. 3.59 is only a minor version update so there's no reason the extension shouldn't work with it unless of course something in that update makes the extension incompatible. But that's highly unlikely.

FYI: version 0.2.0 of this extension is still working for me with FF 3.0. I don't actually use it(mostly because I forget about it tounge.gif ) so I haven't updated it. But why doesn't it check for updates like other extensions? I guess because its not an official extension?

I have no idea why version 2.0 doesn't do proper version checking, I couldn't find a copy of it, to check. The doesn't relate to being an "official extension" or not. Most likely it was a bug in de install.rdf of that version. But I suggest updating anyways, as there is also plenty of new functionality.
The current version will automatically update itself, when a new version is available.

The MAX-version definition as all Firefox extensions have, ensures that developers test their extension first with an Firefox update before users are able to use it. Minor update usually don't break extensions, so wild-card are used for that, but declaring an extension compatible with major versions that aren't even available (the suggestion of setting it to 10.0) is considered very bad practice.

Most extensions are tested, updated and declared compatible by their authors while the FireFox version is in beta. If you want to use early alpha versions of Firefox and still use your extensions (if they still work), than there are configurations settings in firefox to disable the extension version checking. (extensions.checkCompatibility -> TRUE in about:config )

Whits wrong with the current extension? I works for me. If it doesn't work for you because of version incompatibility, try this.

The instructions tell you to download the extension again. You don't need to. Just search your HD for install.rdf then go into Extension Options and highlight the one you want to fix. Look where it says ID. Then look at the folder names in the search results. The folder with the same name as the ID is the folder where the install.rdf for that extension is. Make sure you enable searching hidden files and folders.
