I bring you HBOs new series 'The Newsroom?' It's only two episodes in and im liking it, in part for it blunt but true rant of the main actor (Will) right off the series start. I don't quite know where its headed for story but I'm deeply intrigued by the series. Opening rant of scene one below for reference.
I was looking forward to this series when I first read about it months ago. but now that I've seen the first 2 episodes I'm pretty disappointed.
great idea. poor execution.
I'm going to keep watching to see if anything evolves. but so far the premise is very underwhelming. sure it's cool to see the guy rant about why America isn't as great as everyone thinks, but this idea has been old for awhile now. his little speeches are pretty generic so far, like any mildly-educated Liberal could rattle them off at the drop of a hat.
it's the writing. I'm really disappointed with the writing so far. it's just kind of bland. and if you happen to be a Liberal you'll find yourself agreeing with everything. which is fine but that gets boring fast. I hope the show begins to develop more of its own personality soon and challenges itself and its characters. I'll keep watching until they cancel it...
I watched the first two episodes, only because the wife recorded them and pushed play on the dvr without me looking. It seems to have just enough witty humor and sarcastic undertones to keep me from losing all interest but I cannot see myself watching for 5 seasons....or it lasting more than 2-3 seasons for that matter. I am a fairly hard sell on most movies and t.v. series though so my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.
I will give it a few more and hopefully it pulls me in but as it stands, I just couldn't care less which of them leave to go to 10 pm .

She's been getting stick from a fair few places but she isn't a massive flaw for me thus far. More concerned about this representation of Mackenzie and this unflappable, veteran war correspondent yet she begins flapping like a schoolgirl whenever she's talking to her ex about their break up. Pfft.
You kids must be mad. This has quickly become the show I anticipate the most. It's perfect! The writing is amazing. It's dynamic, and it fits the cast in an amazing way. Yes, it's preachy, as I've heard someone call it, but the only people who would get annoyed are those who are targeted. The topic is necessary - the news nowadays are a joke. The acting is more than fine. Mortimer is charming, Daniels pulls a great performance and Olivia Munn happens to be a geek who was hired to play a... geek.
Frankly, I think the fact that the show is acclaimed everywhere but the States just helps driving the point home.

The women are portrayed as feeble, bleating sheep. Don't get me wrong, I don't give a single sh*t about the suffragette movement, but this show is pretty poorly written. The dialog is very entertaining and I just sort of like being lectured, I guess.
And Olivia Munn is an actress who is bad at acting. I take her about as seriously I would Pamela Anderson in that role.
EDIT: The scenes where they portray the news are always f*cking awesome, though.

agree to disagree, I suppose.
I've watched 4 episodes now. and while the show is good in general (as TV shows go) it's also just nothing special. it's still pretty weak in a lot of ways.
and it's still fairly bland. like Fnorg said; the women on the show are terrible. there's not a single strong female presence, not even his new Exec Producer. her initial depiction as strong and independent was highly manufactured and immediately forsaken the moment that she broke down and basically cried about how lonely and stressed out she was at the end of the first episode.
the other women are bumbling ditz's who make you wonder if they would even have a job if not for their ample titties. the supporting male characters aren't much better. most of their self-righteous "lecturing" reads more like a high school debate team opening argument; with a bunch of little Liberal factoids basically pulled from a cursory understand of Wikipedia articles about the US economy.

Im a bit torn on this one. On one hand the acting is superb besides some of the females. The writing (which comes from the writers of the West Wing) is top notch but the intelligence and wit that it includes is oftentimes over looked because most people (Americans anyway) don't know/don't care about some issues that the show includes thus have no idea what some of characters are talking about.
On the other hand the show tries a bit too hard to get its obviously democrat orientated (nothing wrong with that btw) messages across to its viewers. So far it would seem the show is VERY anti-tea party and that alone is a plus in my book. So ya this show has its ups and downs, but then again I cannot think of a television show of the last twenty years that didn't have positives and negatives.

They do try address the balance to be fair. Like how Sloan (I think) makes it known that it was Clinton who allowed the GLB Act to go through which ultimately lead to the economic collapse. I'm not going to pretend I fully understand that situation other than in the dumbed down terms Sloan put it in but as I say, the left doesn't get off completely free.
Thought Maggie had a strong episode this week. In a little role reversal it was her putting Jim in his place. And I seem to be alone in thinking Munn's understated acting style kind of suits her emotionless workaholic character
I can totally see why some people despise this show but I must admit to being hooked.
well I certainly don't despise the show. I'm far more Liberal than Conservative so The Newsroom is basically preaching the choir (for me).
unfortunately it doesn't change the fact that I just find the writing to be weak and the characters to be relatively hollow. I can sit around all night and happily agree with everything that is said on the show about how America isn't great anymore, and the news media sucks, and partisanship is tearing us apart, blah blah blah. but this doesn't make it any easier for me to enjoy the actual content or storyline.
First off, I loved the writing in The West Wing. It was intelligent, it was snappy, it was quick and it really forced ou to keep up with the characters to understand the issues thy were dealing with. It wasn't really a show for those who like drama (although it got the Emmy for Best Drama three years in a row if I'm not mistaken) but mixed in everything. So here's my question...
Did Sorkin being backs he magic he put in the West Wing? Is this worth watching if you enjoy Sorkin's work?
