I begin to question if GTAForums is keen on this hipster-ish business in any form whatsoever as I've never found a thread on it. If you're a fan of indie music, welcome. If not, here's a good chance to explore an interesting and increasingly-popular music.

What is 'indie'? Simply short for independent rock. Y'know, bands that are signed to their own or independent record labels, shying away from the major ones, yes? Although now, it is slowly becoming a type of music that has it's own distinct sound. It grew out from 60s garage, 70s punk, and 80s post punk it started in the mid 80s as alternative/college radio music. Once Nirvana hit big the alternative genre split: the popular side was just "alternative" and the other half that wasn't "mainstream" (by choice or not) became indie rock.

Indie began sounding alternative (because it is), although now it is expanding to more experimental and "weird" sounds.

Some bands are signed to major labels yet are still considered "indie", such as Modest Mouse. Go figure.

Here are some common examples. Featuring, unintentionally, three Swedish artists:

If you enjoyed any of the above, then I like you. If not, well I might still like you. Regardless, here is a place to talk about any of this type of music if it so tickles your fancy. I'm always interested in exploring new artists as I'm sure most of you are.

Have a bit of indie stuff in my music collection, and I'm definitely pretty in to it. Tons of good stuff you can find if you just look a bit.

The drums rule. Alternatively, here's a bit of a really underappreciated Canadian artist, Chad Van Gaalen.

The Drums are indeed fantastic. They're sound is incredibly addictive. Likewise for this guy, who is also a Canadian act. Seems like they have a plethora of amazing sound.

Gonna have to echo -ska on Dum Dum Girls too.

I tend to sway more towards "lo-fi" indie music for some reason. I like the fuzz feeling from it, and how when you're listening to it there's barely enough for you to grab on to. It's perfect background music for studying, working or concentrating - there's enough to keep you interested, and while it might not necessarily be catchy, you can easily get sutured in. One of my favourite bands is Guided By Voices and they have a similar style.

Not at all.

Indie electronica is kind of what got me into my liking of indie actually. LCD Soundsystem, Lykke Li, Royksopp (not sure if they can definitely be considered "indie" but they're good so whaddaevadaf*ck). I'm pretty picky with the style but if done well it can be one of my favorites.

Speaking of Lykke Li, I just can't stop listening. Really, give it a go:

And probably the most popular indie song at the minute,

It's surprisingly relaxing isn't it? It chills me the f*ck out everytime, puts me in a perfect mood. It's not "pretty" sometimes, but thats part of the whole experience really.

Not sure if they count as "indie" in the definitive way (wikipedia describes them as "noise pop") but I'd identify them as such; I f*cking love Sleigh Bells and I don't care who knows it. They're getting used in a sh*t load of adverts and stuff now, which hopefully means they're raking it in and plugging away with the second album.

Infinity Guitars is one of my favourite songs of the last year:

Riot Rhythm is pretty dope too:

Yes! I can't go on a day without listening to that song! The most joyful song about a massacre ever.

I'm a big fan of LCD Soundsystem

And probably more to Metric

It's definitely the best album I've got this year. Pumped Up Kicks is a brilliant track, but then so are these:

Pumped Up Kicks is a brilliant track, but definitely not the best track on the album.

there's a couple of record labels which have bands i've been checking out lately. both labels are kind of donation based. you can purchase some stuff, donate, or download most of labels' stuff for free. they're about as "indie" as you can get, i suppose. some of the artists are punk, some ska, some rock, maybe some other stuff.

quoteunquoterecords.com out of long island

communityrecords.org out of new orleans.

can't hurt to browse, it's free if you want it to be.

^ Posted that before, in this same music section (diff. thread) Indie music to me is defined by the College radio stations on campus, it's a bit of Alternative Rock and Adult Contemporary in some ways, but Mostly associated with the label and backing of an artist, I'd say

Sorry if this is well known and old or whatnot, but only just heard it on Q the other night. He has yet to release any album, although he is currently working on, to be released next year, so have yet to really listen to any of his other songs.

I can see him being an act you either love or hate.

Not a huge indie fan, but since 2000, I've been a huge fan of Modest Mouse. (Before 2000 they were signed to Up Records, an indie label from Seattle; MM's first album on Epic was in 2000, and back a decade ago I knew almost no one who'd heard of them.)
