They won't be able to go download only on any big ticket games anywhere in the near future. Simply put, those without internet, no games. When big game goes for sale and crashes servers, no game/disgraceful download time. It may be able to save a few 911 calls at midnight releases, but nothing more. I do however, see hard copies of games supplemented at/near launch with download choice. However, due to the lack of effort required to press "Download Now" I see downloads coming at a slightly higher cost at launch, because of the greedy douches we have for game companies now, and because people would likely buy it that way anyway. As some games are already doing, preordering a download would give you access to the game a few days before retail release. This will likely continue and grow as well. I like box games, as I don't need internet to get them, I have better security with them (no chance to be wiped from console memory), and the fact that it is what I have lived with.
