It could be unlocked by getting 100% in single player or there could be references to them on the map and you must take a picture of it to unlock the chracter

That would be nice.

It would be cool to play as old favorites like Tommy, Niko or even Catalina . But I hope they wouldn't lock such a feature to DLC. It would be better if you actually earned it by playing the game, rather than having to purchase DLC for it like with RDR.

Also the GTA 1 and 2 characters don't really have models. Would be weird to play as them.

i got a feeling if this were to happen. you'd see a lot of tommy and cj's and niko's running around multiplayer. but just to be different i'd choose packie.

Earning characters? Why not have all characters/clothes unlocked in MP from the start? Why waste time on it?

OP: Why not, but I'd be using a custom all the time, and sometimes Faustin & Brucie.

Id rather have a fully customized character, face,body type, skin, clothes,etc . I like to be 1 of a kind, not look like everyone else

Not really I mean in one game you wouldn't. Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption had classic/main characters as a option and I'll be honest I don't see many people using them.

With that said I don't play online much but I do think R* should do the same with GTA V.
