We don't know. Rockstar didn't definitely state whether she died or not. The gunshot was just a way to shut up her up.

Maria couldn't have been dead. Because Claude rescued her from Catalina's "death-house" by giving the ransom.

Maria: "This hair cost me fifty do--"

it doesnt make sense claude go rescue maria kill catalina and shoot her
anyway, i believe shes alive since you still can hear her on chatterbox(even if she says every time the same stupid thing)
rockstar could change the radio with a version that didnt have maria speaking in da game if she would be dead(if rockstar can change the bridges loading a different archive, so why not rockstar could change to another chatterbox radio version?)
Claude would be really happy enough to dont kill maria even if she talked forever since he got hes revenge!

The radio thing is inconclusive...unlike later games like S.A., the content never changes. It's just a loop which plays the same thing even before the characters meet in the game.

It's also possible to get Maria to walk around in the game AFTER the credits have rolled. Just have her get in a vehicle with you immediately after firing a rocket at the helicopter (stand close to the passenger door to make this easier). If she gets in before the helicopter actually explodes, she'll exit the vehicle you are in which has warped to the safehouse. That trick is inconclusive as well...just a programming quirk allowed by the game engine.

The gunshot is meant to signal the end of the storyline. Reading more into it is not R*'s problem. Having her speech cut short without ANY gunshot might have led players to think that the game is glitched, right?

maybe claude shot himself to escape from maria's annoying talking? then the rest of the game takes place in claudes comma where tanks fall from the sky and doing a jig makes you healthy again

If you get the GTA 3 text editior you can see more cut lines. She was never actually shot. It was just there. She starts talking about her being a big girl in the cut text.

Id really like to see it get picked up as well. I dont speak Japanese so that version really doesnt do me much good. This has been a great series so far and Id like to get my own copy some day
P.S. In Canada the price for DVDs would run about 40 dollars Canadian. Each DVD having 3 to 5 episodes depending on the distributor.
